Factors Associated with Seatbelt, Helmet, and Child Safety Seat Use in a Spanish High-Risk Injury Area

Abstract: Protective device use is associated with sociodemographic, health, and wealth-related variables, and type of exposure to traffic. There are also ecological variables associated with the behaviors studied. These findings should be helpful for planning safer habits promotion programs. Further research, from the discourse analysis of people with different risk profile, should be performed to improve the understanding of the use of protective devices.

“…In consonance with the finding here, other investigations have found a graded relationship between injury-related morbibidity/mortality and educational attainment and/or various measures of intelligence in both military [95,96] and civilian [97,98] studies. Greater educational attainment may be associated with behaviors conducive to injury prevention [99] and/or the ability to more rapidly and effectively process information relating to risk reduction.…”

“…5 Likewise, some individual-related variables have been defi ned as markers of differences among people sharing the same background and environment such as education level, gender and age. 1 Other individual-related variables infl uencing helmet use are closely related to the road user profi le including having or not having a driver's license, type of motorcycle, among others. Finally, some studies identify subjacent attitudinal variables that infl uence helmet use.…”

“…A 2006 publication using a Spanish population ( 50 ) pointed out gender‐ and age‐based differences regarding safety belt use and motorcycle riding. Yet, in our analysis neither covariate had a statistically significant effect on the rate of motor vehicle hospitalization once exposure was included in the model.…”
