Background: Anemia is a condition where the red blood cells and their capacity to carry oxygen is not adequate to meet the physiological needs. In pregnancy iron demand is high and loss of appetite can adversely affect this condition. So, guidelines to combat anemia has provisions to provide iron in the form of iron folic acid tablets to pregnant women during antenatal and postnatal care. But compliance is still low among pregnant women who needs attention.Methods: This study included 192 postnatal mothers in Cheluvamba hospital, Mysore. Details about socio-demographic factors and number of tablets taken during antenatal period were collected using proforma. Pregnant women who had taken less than hundred tablets during antenatal period were considered non-compliant.Results: The overall compliance to iron folic tablets was 71%. The factors which were independently associated with non-compliance are nuclear family, less number of antenatal visit, tablets from private source, and anemia in current pregnancy. The reasons for non-compliance among the pregnant women who were non-compliant were inadequate counselling by health care worker followed by side effects, cost of tablets, ignorance and fear of side effects.Conclusions: Family support, adequate counselling and continuous supply of tablets free of cost would increase the compliance to tablets among pregnant women.

RESUMOEm virtude do pequeno número de estudos que analisam os benefícios de mudanças dietéticas no desenvolvimento da gestação, do parto e da lactação, esta revisão sistemática buscou investigar os efeitos da oferta de suplementação de nutrientes e outras modificações dietéticas, em desfechos desejáveis nos processos de gestação e lactação, bem como na prevenção de desfechos clínicos indesejáveis nos recém-nascidos. Foi estruturada conforme as recomendações Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), resultando na seleção de 11 artigos para comporem os resultados do estudo. Buscaram-se artigos originais, indexados às bases de dados eletrônicas PubMed Central (PMC); Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO) e publicados entre 2008 e 2018, nos idiomas: português, inglês e espanhol. Os descritores estão listados no Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) -em inglês, e nos Descritores em Ciências da Saúde (DeCS)-em português. Com esse estudo pode-se observar a importância da nutrição durante o período gravídico puerperal e seu impacto na saúde materno-infantil. Nota-se que a qualidade de vida da mãe e, principalmente, a qualidade da sua alimentação são imprescindíveis para um bom desenvolvimento fetal. Sendo assim, a avaliação nutricional completa, com foco em uma intervenção precoce, para correção dos desvios diagnosticados, faz-se essencial durante todo o período gestacional e puerperal. Background: A primary health centre (PHC) physician, because of his physician-provider interaction at community level and legitimate capacity to deliver and monitor health services, serves as an ideal candidate to understand the specific health/ health program related issues. Methods: This community based qualitative study was conducted in selected clusters of state of Madhya Pradesh (central India) identified through multileveled stratification. The physicians serving in primary health centres from the selected clusters were in depth interviewed through topic guides based upon conceptual construct. The data obtained through in-depth interviews was utilized for thematic framework and linkage association. Results: Two major interrelated themes emerged from the convergence of the user related and system related subthemes. The first major theme is “distorted perceptions reinforced by unpleasant encounters” which is constructed from the convergence of user concerns. The theme “system resistance and resource constraints” is assembled from convergence of system issues. Conclusions: On a policy perspective, all the attempts should be made to break the misconception around IFA supplementation and to augment the feeling of ownership in the community.
