Factors associated with corneal high-order aberrations before and after femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis

Abstract: Background: Corneal high-order aberrations (HOAs) are related to visual quality. However, the factors associated with corneal HOAs before and after femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK)have not yet been elucidated. The aim of this study is to observe the factors related to corneal HOAs before and after FS-LASIK.Methods: Prospective observational study was designed to measure corneal HOAs in 149 eyes of 75 patients before and 6 months after FS-LASIK. The relationship between spherical dio… Show more

“…12 The trefoil also increased postoperatively in all 3 groups, which could be explained by the uneven reconstruction and distribution of the epithelium, therefore inducing the abnormal curvature and trefoil. 25,26 There was a significant difference in the incidence of induced HOAs, spherical aberration, and coma among the 3 groups ( P < .001), with enhanced clinical outcomes of SMILE for astigmatism correction.…”

“…Understanding of the human ocular refractive system is constantly improving with the rapid development of physical optics. In particular, higher order aberration (HOA) has enhanced the study of visual quality [12][13][14] and has become an important index in research on refractive surgery. Spherical-like aberration or LSA is a higher order aberration with significant impact on visual quality.…”

“…In addition, CCT have been relied on to design the ablation zone diameters, which is closely related to postoperative visual quality. For example, a smaller ablation zone diameter normally results in an increase corneal HOAs 9 , which is associated with lower visual quality postoperatively. In our study, an apparent increase in CCT was found, and this increase showed the potential significant errors in preoperative planning, which is not only concerned screening the risk of postoperative corneal keratectasia, but also the evaluation of postoperative visual quality for LASIK 10 .…”
