Factors Affecting Temporal and Spatial Variations of Microcystins in Gonghu Bay of Lake Taihu, with Potential Risk of Microcystin Contamination to Human Health

Abstract: A field survey of the seasonal variation of microcystin (MC) concentration was performed in Gonghu Bay (a total of 15 sampling sites) of Lake Taihu from January to December 2008. Microcystis spp. biomass and intra-/extracellular MCs were significantly correlated with water temperature, suggesting the importance of temperature in cyanobacterial blooming in the lake. Higher MC concentration was found in summer and autumn, and peaks of Microcystis biomass and intra-/extracellular MC concentrations were all presen… Show more

“…The production of [D-Leu 1 ] MC-LR decreased with increasing temperature, coinciding with the findings of Gorham, 1964;Runnegar et al, 1983;van der Westhuizen and Eloff, 1985;Cood and Poon, 1988;Sivonen, 1990;Rapala et al, 1997;Lehman et al, 2008;Wang et al, 2010 andGiannuzzi et al (2016). van der Westhuizen and Eloff (1985) reported that the optimal growth conditions do not coincide with the production of toxins.…”

“…However, up to now, there are no pure isolated cultures of W. naegeliana in the world cyanobacterial collection, and we also failed to maintain any culture after isolation. With respect to Microcystis, and confirming our results on M. botrys, other studies in the field have observed significant correlations between the population abundances and MC concentrations (Wang et al, 2010;Horst et al, 2014, among others).…”

“…A range of environmental factors, including nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations (Schindler, 2012;Srivastava et al, 2012;Chaffin and Bridgeman, 2014; Van de Waal et al, 2014), TN : TP ratio (Smith, 1983;Wang et al, 2010b; Van de Waal et al, 2014), temperature (Davis et al, 2009;Rolland et al, 2013), salinity (Tonk et al, 2007), and iron concentration (Ame and Wunderlin, 2005;Nagai et al, 2007;Wang et al, 2010a) have been shown to have pronounced effects on cyanobacterial biomass, cyanobacterial dominance and microcystin production. Nevertheless, the results between studies differ, and there is no clear understanding of the roles of these environmental factors as the triggers of cyanobacterial bloom development and microcystin production.…”
