Factors affecting seed dormancy and germination of Johnsongrass, Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.

Abstract: Summary Seeds of Johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] germinated to higher percentages (20–30% higher) when incubated at 28 and 35° C than at 10 or 22° C. After‐ripening was accelerated by dry storage of these seeds at 50°C. Seeds pre‐chilled at 6°C for 2–4 weeks followed by incubation at 28°C germinated 40–60%. Light effects on germination were related to incubation temperatures; inhibitory at 22°C; no response at 28°C; and stimulatory at 35°C. Effects of gibberellin A3 (GA3) also varied depending on i… Show more

“…Die tempo van saadkieming en opkoms van saailinge word be"invioed deur dormansie, omgewingsfaktore en die voorbereidingspraktyke van die grond (Egley, 1974). Waterspanning (Tayiorson, 1986), sekere temperature (Huang & Hsiao, 1977;Baskin & Baskin, 1986) of ligkwantiteit (Chcam, 1986) inhibeer of stimuieer kieming. Grondbew~rkingspraklyke kan sade nader na die grondoppervlak bnng en so kieming induseer of kan dormansie induseer deur.…”

“…], a perennial weed and one of the world's worst weeds (Holm, 1969;Holm et al, 1977), reproduces prolifically from both vegetative and seed propagules. Seed dormancy and germination of this important weed species have been reviewed by Huang & Hsiao (1987a) and Monaghan (1979).…”

“…Previous studies in several weed species on the role of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) in releasing seed dormancy (Hsiao, 1979a(Hsiao, , b, 1980Hsiao, Worsham & Moreland, 1981;Huang & Hsiao, 1987a) all indicated that germination, in general, increased with increasing exposure of the weed seeds to 700 or 800 mM NaOCI. NaOCI immersion also made the seeds more sensitive to exogenous gibberellin A3 (GA3), light, or both.…”
