Ensuring universal access to education is an effective and sustainable means of empowering people with visual impairment and blindness. Literature confirms that blindness of a person is not a barrier for learning, yet past research brings about a range of diverse obstacles for productive engagement in education due to universities being designed for the sighted persons. Given that the persons with impairment are looked after comparatively better in the western world than in the developing nations for realising their challenging academic goals. Purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a comprehensive study on the academic work of persons with visual impairment and blindness in the tertiary sector. This population included recent undergraduates and those who have completed a university degree. The two distinct outcomes presented are; (first phase) the critical factors influencing the academic performance of persons with visually impairment and blindness and, (second phase) an explanatory model that characterizes the construct ‘the academic performance’. Using a semi-structured questionnaire, purposely selected eleven key informant interviews were utilized for the first phase for the qualitative investigation. Thematic analysis was used as the main method of data analysis. The Second phase employed a sample survey. Fifty respondents who had studied in universities during the 5-year period from 2015-2020 were selected through snow-ball sampling. Exploratory factor analysis was used as the main data analysis technique. The key findings of phase one revealed that external support, physical environment, motivation to learn, instructional strategies, ICT and English literacy are major contributory factors to academic performance. The second phase of the quantitative analysis derived five composite factors. Of these, the factor labeled “Motivating influences” appears to be mostly contributing to the academic performance of persons with visual impairment and blindness. While education is a lifelong endeavor of a person, these findings can contribute to make a substantial change in the quality of life of this community in the long run. A pesquisa tem como objetivo verificar a influência dos fatores pessoais, institucionais e dos estilos de aprendizagem no desempenho acadêmico dos discentes de Ciências Contábeis nas disciplinas com o maior índice de reprovação de uma Instituição de Ensino Superior. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de questionário aplicado com os alunos do 2º, 3º e 4º anos e foram obtidas 229 respostas válidas. Para testar as hipóteses, foi utilizada a estatística descritiva e multivariada (regressão). Os resultados indicam que alguns dos fatores pessoais, tais como “turno”, “escola do ensino médio”, “estado civil”, “experiência na área”, “horas de estudo extraclasse”, “faixa etária”, “jornada de trabalho”, “membros da família”, “moradia”, “participação econômica familiar” e “renda familiar” apresentaram relação estatisticamente significativa com o desempenho. Dos componentes institucionais, a estratégia do projeto pedagógico do curso apresentou influência, enquanto a estrutura, o ambiente interno, o sistema técnico e a estratégia do corpo docente não foram confirmados. Por fim, os estilos de aprendizagem mostraram-se significativos apenas na disciplina de Laboratório Contábil, na qual estudantes com estilo convergente apresentaram média superior aos demais estilos. A identificação dessas variáveis (características pertinentes aos discentes e à instituição) possibilita à coordenação do curso de Ciências Contábeis e aos docentes estudarem estratégias para melhorar o resultado acadêmico dessas disciplinas, que são as que apresentam o maior índice de reprovação. A longo prazo, também espera-se contribuir para uma melhora nos índices do Exame Nacional de Desempenho dos Estudantes e no Exame de Suficiência.

The study examined the influence of parental care on the academic achievement of students with physical impairment in Kwara state. The study adopted a descriptive survey of a correlational type. All students with a physical impairment in Kwara State were the population of this study while 185 students with a physical impairment who were selected through snowball and purposive sampling techniques constituted a sample for this study. A researcher-designed instrument titled: “Influence of Parental Care on Academic Achievement Questionnaire” (IPCAAQ) was used to collect data from the respondents. The data collected were analysed using percentages for demography data and main research questions, Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPPC) statistical tool was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that the majority (87.6%) of the students with physical impairment experienced positive parental care and that more than half of the students with physical impaired have high and average levels of academic performance. A significant correlation between parental care and academic achievement of students with physical impairment in Kwara state. In addition, a significant relationship was found between the parental care and academic achievement of male and female students with physical impairment irrespective of their age group. Based on the finding, it was recommended that counsellors should intensify efforts on encouraging parents to show caring for their children with any form of disability in order for them to have good academic achievement.
