This paper investigated the influence of achievement motivation on Nigerian undergraduates' attitude towards examination. Descriptive survey of the correlational type was employed for the study. One thousand, five hundred and thirty-six (1,536) undergraduates in Nigeria were drawn using purposive and stratified sampling techniques. Four research questions were generated to guide the application of the study, while two null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level. Achievement Motivation Scale" (AMS) and "Attitude Towards Examination Scale" (ATES) were the instruments used to collect relevant data. The findings revealed that majority of Nigerian undergraduates have a high level of achievement motivation. The findings also revealed that majority of Nigerian undergraduates have a positive attitude towards examination. There was a significant correlation between achievement motivation and attitude of Nigerian undergraduates towards examination. The findings also revealed that gender, age, level of study, university and family type had a significant positive influence on undergraduates' achievement motivation and attitude towards examination in Nigeria. It was therefore recommended, among others that counsellors and lecturers should be properly equipped with strategies needed to assist students in developing appropriate achievement motivation level so as to promote positive attitude towards examination.
This study investigated the influence of social media on the sexual behaviour of youth in Kwara State. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. A total of 395 youth participated in the study. One research question was raised while three null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The instrument used for data collection for this study was a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled “Influence of Social Media Questionnaire” (ISMQ). The findings revealed that social media has considerable influence on the sexual behaviour of youth in Kwara State. Social media leads students to the act of sending erotic messages, watching pornographic films and movies, and also increases risky sexual behaviour such as masturbation. There were no significant differences in the influence of social media on sexual behaviour of youth in Kwara State based on gender, age and university attended. It was therefore recommended that counsellors should expose students to the danger inherent in negative uses of social media and analyze the possible result of proper usage of social media. Counsellors should also provide information specifically on the safe and respectful use of technology, as well as consequences of the negative use of social media to students of different genders, ages and universities attended.
Sexual development of the youth has increased in the society and public health concerns of all involved. This study investigated the influence of peer pressure on sexual behavior of undergraduates in Kwara State. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study as well as multi stage sampling procedure. A total of 395 undergraduates participated in the study, four research questions were generated to guide the conduct of the study, while three null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The instrument used for data collection for this study was a researchers-designed and structured questionnaire entitled "Influence of Peer Pressure Questionnaire" (IPPQ). The findings revealed that the influence of peer pressure on sexual behavior of undergraduates reveals that it leads students to erotic electro-stimulation, prostitution, risk of contracting Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) and involvement in incest. There were no significant differences in the influence of peer pressure on sexual behavior of undergraduates in Kwara State based on gender and age. There was a significant difference in the influence of peer pressure on sexual behavior of undergraduates in Kwara State based on university attended. It was therefore recommended, among others that counsellors should enlighten the students on how peer pressure could be used to channel the students' behavior towards positive activities, counsellors should inform the students about the positive and negative influence of peer pressure to enhance self-esteem and social skills rather than for abusive purposes to students of different gender and age and counsellors should look for underlying issues that may have led to exhibition of risk sexual behavior through peer pressure and try to identify the perpetrators so that the victims could be offered counselling on assertiveness skills, socialization skills and improving self-concept.
Nowadays, lectures and teachings have been conducted through social media. However, social media has its downside which when students and youths are not well monitored, they will absorb the negative side from their social media. Hence, this survey focused on the influence of social media on the social behavior of students as viewed by primary school teachers in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. The survey is descriptive with two hundred primary school teachers selected as participants. A research question was raised and answered, and there were three hypotheses formulated and tested using t-test and ANOVA at a p-value of 0.05. The findings revealed that students’ usage of social media had a negative influence on their social behavior. In addition, there were no statistical differences in the view of participants on the influence of social media on the social behavior of teachers based on gender, age, and educational level. Therefore, primary school teachers need to sensitize students on the appropriate use of social media to improve their social behavior among others was recommended.
BackgroundContraceptive use helps in preventing unplanned pregnancy and reducing maternal death among married women.ObjectiveTo investigate the attitude of married women towards contraceptive use in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. The study also examined whether the variables of age and educational attainment would influence attitude of married women towards contraceptive use in Ilorin metropolis.MethodsDescriptive survey design and analytical methods were adopted for the study. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to draw a total of 200 respondents. A questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Mean and rank order was used to answer the research question while Analysis of Variance was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level.ResultsThe attitude of married women towards contraceptive use in Ilorin metropolis was negative. There was no significant difference in the attitude of married women towards contraceptive use based on age and educational attainment.ConclusionMost married women in Ilorin metropolis have negative attitude towards contraceptive use. We recommended that counselling services be provided to women on how to deal with side effects associated with various modern contraceptive methods.
The academic challenges faced by university students are enormous and emerge from various sources. It is in the light of this that this study investigated the sources of academic stress among undergraduates at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. Demographic variables of gender, age and mode of entry were considered. A descriptive survey design was adopted. A sample of 300 students was randomly selected across the faculties. A research question was raised and three null hypotheses were postulated respectively to guide the study. Data were collected using a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled “Sources of Academic Stress Questionnaire” (SASQ). Data analysis was done using percentages, mean and t-test. The findings of this study revealed that University of Ilorin undergraduates are exposed to different sources of academic stress which include academic overloads, fear of failure and acclimatizing to academic expectations. The findings also showed that there was no significant difference in the sources of academic stress among undergraduates at the University of Ilorin based on gender and age while there was a significant difference in the sources of academic stress among undergraduates based on mode of entry. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that orientation programs should be made compulsory for all newly admitted students and academic development programs created for returnees at faculties and departmental levels.
Depression is a common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite and poor concentration. This study therefore investigates the manifestations of depression among undergraduates of universities in Kwara State. It also examined the influence of variables of religious affiliation and level of study on undergraduates’ responses. Descriptive survey design was adopted for this study and multi-stage sampling procedure which comprises purposive, proportional, stratified and simple random sampling techniques were adopted to draw a total sample of 600 undergraduates from two universities in Kwara State. “Manifestations of Depression Questionnaire (MDQ)” was used to collect relevant data. The instrument was subjected to test re-test reliability co-efficient which yielded the score of 0.78 and the hypotheses were analysed using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 significance level. Frequency counts and percentages were used to present the demographic data. The findings of the study identified poor school academic performance, avoidance of responsibility and difficulty in day to day tasks, health problems and loss of self-confidence as major manifestations of depression among undergraduates of universities in Kwara State, Nigeria. The hypotheses tested revealed no significant difference in the manifestations of depression among undergraduates of Universities in Kwara State based on religious affiliation and level of study. In line with the findings of this study, it was recommended among others that members in peer groups should be encouraged to assist one another and encourage prompt reportage of depression.
