Factorial Invariance of the 10-Item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale Across Gender Among Chinese Elders

Abstract: Resilience plays an important role in the health of the elderly. The 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10) is widely used to evaluate resilience, but its factorial invariance has not been evaluated in the Chinese elders. In the current study, 1,238 Chinese elders aged 60 years and above completed the Chinese CD-RISC-10, yielding good reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.936, Omega coefficient = 0.83, and test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.665 after 6 months). Confirmatory … Show more

“…As expected and in accordance with previous results ( 7 9 , 13 , 15 17 , 30 , 31 , 34 37 , 41 ), we have confirmed the unifactorial structure of the questionnaire. It means that resilience, in accordance with its understanding by Connor and Davidson and later by Campbell and Sills, is a fairly uniform, internally consistent, and cross-culturally invariant personality trait that can really be measured with one simple instrument.…”

“…With regard to gender, the results of this study uphold configural, metric, and scalar invariance. Evidence of strong measurement invariance across gender is consistent with previous findings with rather specific samples of participants (Cheng et al, 2020;Guarnizo Guzmán et al, 2019;Gonzalez et al, 2016;Meng et al, 2019;Smith et al, 2018) and a comparable Spanish general population sample (Pulido-Martos et al, 2020). This evidence allows for the examination of gender differences in latent mean scores.…”

“…Several studies, relying on rather specific samples of participants, provided information about measurement invariance of the CD-RISC-10. For instance, the measurement invariance across genders was demonstrated in competitive distance runners in Australia (Gonzalez et al, 2016), US public accountants (Smith et al, 2018), Chinese undergraduate students (Cheng et al, 2020) and older adults (Meng et al, 2019), and Colombian vulnerable adolescents (Guarnizo Guzmán et al, 2019). In addition, (partial) measurement invariance across age was revealed in Australian adolescent and adult cricketers (Gucciardi et al, 2011) and US accountants (Smith et al, 2018).…”

“…However, other studies have not shown conclusive results, as some mention a greater resilience in men (Hirani et al, 2016 ; Stratta et al, 2013 ) and others reveal a higher level of resilience in women. (Meng et al, 2019 ). This lack of consistency between results may be due to social and cultural variations (Meng, et al, 2019 ).…”
