“…Test-retest reliability over a 1-month period ranged from .79 to .89 for scores on the three scales (Schludermann & Schludermann, 1988). Discriminant and convergent validity has been demonstrated (Schwarz, Barton-Henry, & Pruzinsky, 1985;Schuldermann & Schuldermann, 1970), and the measure has shown acceptable construct validity with other measures of parenting behavior (Safford, Alloy, & Pieracci, 2007;Steele et al, 2005). Furthermore, the CRPBI has been used in child samples as young as age seven (Deblinger, Steer, & Lipmann, 1999;Greenley, Holmbeck, & Rose, 2006;McKernon et al, 2001;Teleki, Powell, & Claypool, 1984).…”

“…Although parent reports and child reports of parenting tend to show low agreement (Edens, Cavell, & Hughes, 1999;Gonzales, Cauce, & Mason, 1996;Muris et al, 1996), children's reports of parental behavior from elementary school-aged children are used frequently (Bögels & Melick, 2004;Brown & Whiteside, 2008;Krakauer, 1992;Muris et al, 1996;Steele, 2005;Teleki, 1984). The low agreement, in conjunction with possible socially desirable response tendencies, suggests that there are biases associated with both children's reports and parents' self-report (Bögels & Melick, 2004).…”

“…Brody and Flor (1998) found that for African Americans, no-nonsense parenting predicted higher levels of self-regulation, which in turn predicted higher cognitive competence and social competence and lower levels of internalizing problems. In their sample of low-income African Americans, Steele, Nesbitt-Daly, Daniel, and Forehand (2005) reported positive correlations between harsh discipline practices and parental warmth, a reflection of no-nonsense parenting in which parents exhibit greater reactivity because of their high investment in their children.…”

“…What we have shown is that relationships among parenting behaviors and child outcomes can differ for parents of different ethnicities and that optimal parenting monitoring styles can vary based on ethnicity or cultural background. Similar to literature on ethnicity and parenting styles, this study suggests that African American parents can be high in positive parenting behaviors as well as high in strictness and control (McLoyd et al, 2000;Steele et al, 2005;Yasui & Dishion, 2007). Additionally, there are differences in average levels of parenting behavior across ethnic majority and minority groups, which can provide insight into the differences in positive, negative, or non-existent effects of parenting on child behavior.…”
