Although theory posits a multidimensional structure of resilience, studies have supported a unidimensional solution for data obtained from the commonly used Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). This study investigated the latent structure of CD-RISC responses in a sample of postsecondary students with disabilities. Furthermore, the validity of CD-RISC scores was examined with respect to career optimism and well-being. The analyses were conducted using confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM). Results supported a bifactor-ESEM representation of the CD-RISC data that accounts for construct-relevant multidimensionality in scores due to the presence of general and specific factors and the fallibility of indicators as pure reflections of the constructs they measure. Although three specific factors showed meaningful residual specificity over and above the general factor, two specific factors were weakly defined with little meaningful residual specificity. However, these factors may retain some utility in the bifactor-ESEM model insofar as they control for limited levels of residual covariance in items. Evidence was also obtained for relations of the general and substantively interpretable specific factors with career optimism and well-being. The results of the study provide validation data for the CD-RISC and clarify recent research converging on seemingly disparate unidimensional and multidimensional solutions.

Background. Despite the frequency of traumatic or stressful events experienced by refugee children and adolescents prior to migration and following resettlement, the majority do not experience mental health problems emphasising the critical nature of resilience. While a host of factors deemed to be protective of mental health in young refugees have been identified, there has been little research exploring the role of resilience as a distinct psychological construct. This study aimed to explore the nature of psychological resilience in refugee adolescents and the relationship between resilience and depression, other emotional and behavioural problems, and mental health service uptake. Method. One hundred and seventy multiethnic refugee adolescents aged 13–17 from South Australia were administered a survey comprising the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Results. Females tended to have higher resilience, as did those adolescents who had been living in Australia longer. Adolescents suffering from depressive symptoms or other emotional or behavioural problems had lower resilience. There was little evidence of an association between resilience scores and exposure to trauma or service utilisation. Discussion. Fostering resilience may be critical to efforts to prevent or reduce mental health problems in refugee adolescents.

ResumenEl objetivo de este estudio fue determinar y analizar las relaciones existentes entre la resiliencia, los niveles de ansiedad (estado y rasgo) y las lesiones deportivas en base al nivel competitivo. Para ello se analizaron a 185 futbolistas de diversos clubes y categorías, mediante los cuestionarios CD-RISC y STAI-RASGO, así como una hoja de autoregistro de lesiones. Se realizó un análisis mediante ecuaciones estructurales y los resultados depararon que a mayor nivel de profesionalidad mayor capacidad de resiliencia, concluyéndose que el nivel competitivo afecta de una manera directa a la capacidad de afrontar las lesiones independientemente de los niveles de ansiedad que tengan los futbolistas.Palabras clave: Resiliencia, ansiedad, lesión deportiva, deporte, fútbol, profesional. AbstractThe objective of this study was to establish and analyze the relationship between resilience, anxiety states and sports injuries, taking in account the level of competition. 185 soccer players of various clubs and categories participated, using diversity questionnaires such as: CD-RISC and STAI-RASGO, as well as an injuries register. Analysis with structural equations was carried out. Results showed that competitive level directly affects the capacity of confronting future injuries independently of the anxiety states players have.
