“…Nevertheless, some studies have suggested that the structure of BDI-II can be best described as three-dimensional, distributing the cognitive-affective dimension into two distinct factors. 17,20,41,56,66,98,122,136 Further analyses revealed that the BDI-II presents reasonable factorial invariance when assessing the severity of depressive symptoms; this covariance structure is equivalent across gender and ethnicity in American college students 58 and across gender in Taiwanese college students and adolescents. 60,61 Sophisticated alternative structural analysis of the BDI-II was strengthened by two investigative breakthroughs: the hierarchical model and the bifactor model.…”

“…The BDI-II is a 21-question, multiple-choice, self-report inventory, examining the severity and the occurrence of cognitive, affective, somatic and vegetative symptoms of depression during the last two weeks. The BDI-II questionnaire has been found to have optimal internal reliability, with cronbach's alpha indexes of around .90 (Osman et al, 1997). Cronbach's alpha of the current BDI dataset was .77, which reflects good internal reliability of the items.…”

“…On one item pertaining to lack of pleasure in activities, for example, 0 = "I get as much pleasure as I ever did from the things I enjoy," 1 = "I don't enjoy things as much as I used to," 2 = "I get very little pleasure from the things I used to enjoy," and 4 = "I can't get any pleasure from the things I used to enjoy" (Beck et al, 1996). The BDI-II seems to exhibit a three factor structure, with factors described as representing negative attitude, performance difficulties, and somatic symptoms (see Osman et al, 1997). Another depression measure, therefore, was administered to assess the extent to which the participants were experiencing sadness-related depressive phenomena.…”
