Facile Synthesis of High Quality TiO2 Nanocrystals in Ionic Liquid via a Microwave-Assisted Process

Abstract: Herein we report a facile method to synthesize anatase nanocrystals (NCs) with uniform size and shape via a microwave-assisted route in ionic liquid. These NCs are highly crystalline, low in Ti3+ defect, and free of aggregation.

“…However, this process requires a subsequent calcination at 500°C to obtain the crystalline phase. Kunlun et al 25) synthesized TiO 2 nanoparticles in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate using a MW-assisted process. Although well-defined crystalline TiO 2 particles were directly obtained in the IL, high temperature over 230°C is probably essential for crystallization.…”

“…32 Interestingly, microwave-assisted synthesis can be carried out in domestic microwave ovens, [33][34][35] reproducible results being achieved as long as the amount of reagents, the irradiation time and the resting periods between irradiation intervals are adequately controlled. [36][37][38][39][40] The use of domestic apparatus has the advantage of lower cost whereas ovens specifically designed for laboratory operation allow temperature and pressure control. 41 In some MW laboratory ovens the irradiation of the sample can be much more homogeneous than in domestic MW ovens.…”

“…Longer alkyl side chains (greater than or equal to C 4 ) can cause the segregation of polar and nonpolar domains [3,4]. Besides, with a strong nanostructural organization tendency, many ILs are also used as a template or a surfactant for template-assisted, shapecontrolled synthesis of different nanostructures [5].…”
