Facile synthesis of bifunctional silica-coated core–shell Y2O3:Eu3+,Co2+ composite particles for biomedical applications

Abstract: In the present study, bifunctional silica-coated Y 2 O 3 :Eu 3+ ,Co 2+ spherical-shaped submicron composite particles were successfully prepared using a facile urea-assisted homogenous precipitation method. Synthesized Y 2 O 3 :Eu 3+ ,Co 2+ phosphor composites showed both ferromagnetic behaviour and strong visible red luminescence emission. The surface of the Y 2 O 3 :Eu 3+ ,Co 2+ phosphor composites was modified with a thin silica layer to enhance the luminescent properties and obtain higher biocompatibility … Show more

“…All samples were measured under identical conditions so that the emission ratio could be compared. Figure 2 shows the PL emission spectrum revealed several main groups of emission lines, which were assigned to the 5 D 1 → 7 F 1 and 5 D 0 → 7 F j (where j = 0, 1, 2, 3) transitions within the Eu 3+ [12,13,14]. Partial replacement of Y 3+ with Gd 3+ in the host matrix allows easier charge transfer from Gd 3+ to Eu 3+ [15].…”

“…For example, recent studies have suggested that a homogeneous yttria-lanthanides solid mixture can be obtained using the homogeneous urea precipitation method [11,12]. In addition, yttria-based nanostructures can potentially be used for optical biomaging purposes [13,14]. …”

“…After the membrane is wrapped by NPs, some NPs are invaginated in the vesicle, which looks like agglomerates [36]. Although the further detailed study for the cellular uptake mechanism was not examined here, previous seminal studies have shown that larger NPs (100–200 nm) would be incorporated into cells more readily by endocytosis than smaller ones (~10 nm), which are generally taken up by cells via pinocytosis [37,38]. Smaller APTMS-coated MNPs are considered to easily permeate the cell membrane by pinocytosis.…”

“…The number of viable cells was directly proportional to the metabolic reaction products obtained in the CCK-8 assay [33, 34]. Briefly, a concentration of 1 × 10 4 cells/ml was seeded on each mat, and incubated for 4 h (cell attachment) or 1, 3, 5 and 7 days (proliferation) at 37°C.…”
