Facile and Green Synthesis of Carboxylated Cellulose Nanocrystals as Efficient Adsorbents in Wastewater Treatments

Abstract: A simple and eco-friendly Fe2+/H2O2 oxidation of microcrystalline celluloses (MCCs) to prepare cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with high carboxylation content is proposed. The effects of reaction times on the morphology, microstructure, and chemical and thermal properties of isolated carboxylated CNCs were investigated. The oxidative decomposition of Fe2+/H2O2 solution of MCC yielded CNCs with a size of 92–140 nm in length and 19–23 nm in width. The CNCs extracted at 6 h possessed the highest carboxyl content (2… Show more

“…45,46 The TEMPO mediated oxidation of CNC to CCN was strongly supported by the appearance of a peak at 1727 cm À1 due to -COOH group. 47,48 For the M3D-PAA-CCN nanocomposite, C]O stretching vibration appeared at 1740 cm À1 (Fig. 1A) for the carboxylate groups of PAA.…”

“…[15][16][17][18][19] Few treatments are reported to introduce cationic groups, such as guanidine, and they usually require multiple processing steps. [20][21][22][23] A cheap and facile path to cationic nanocellulose however broadens their application range, for example as sorbents for wastewater treatment to remove harmful anionic contaminants, 23,24 and expands the toolbox of building blocks for complex and sustainable composite materials. 25 This work aims to meet the requirements of green chemistry to prepare high-value materials from sustainable resources, using technologies and chemicals with minimized impact on the environment.…”

“…TOCNF exhibits high crystallinity (65-95%), a high aspect ratio (>100), and high negative zeta potential in an aqueous solution (−75 mV, Table 1). It is worth mention that ecofriendly oxidation of microcrystalline celluloses (MCCs) using Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 oxidant offered CNCs with the highest carboxyl content of 2.2 mmol/g with a zeta potential of −41 mV (Fan et al, 2019). Different nanoscaled cellulose, have been employed for water purification motivated by the high abundance, high specific surface area, high surface-to-volume ratio, good mechanical properties in an aqueous medium, surface functional groups, and surface charge density of these nanomaterials (Table 1).…”
