Objectives. The focus of this study is to determine the outcomes of botulinum toxin injections in patients with symptomatic bruxism. Material and methods. We reviewed the medical records of patients with bruxism and facial arthromyalgia syndrome treated by botulinum toxin injections. We evaluated the initial complaints, clinical findings, technique of neurotoxin administration, previous treatments and post-injection outcomes. Results. Pain related symptoms were significantly decreased in all patients one month following administration and maintained three months post-injection. Complications of the technique were mild and rarely encountered. Conclusions. Botulinum toxin is effective in reducing the associated symptoms of bruxism, and its administration is generally safe if careful injection technique is employed and adequate doses used.

Background: Physiognomy is still practiced in China and is a factor influencing the cosmetic procedures offered by aesthetic practitioners, and treatments requested by patients. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of belief in physiognomy in China and its effect on cosmetic treatments requested and offered by aesthetic practitioners. Methods and materials: This study consisted of a survey given to the general public (online) and Chinese aesthetic practitioners (face to face). Results: A total of 1816 responses (1070 general public, 746 aesthetic practitioners) were collected. About 63% of the general population and 86.3% of the aesthetic practitioners stated they believed in facial physiognomy. A majority of the general population surveyed believed that facial appearance can determine various aspects of their life. However, the majority believed changing their facial features would not affect factors believed to be determined by physiognomy. A total of 73.9% of the aesthetic practitioners thought their belief in physiognomy affected the treatments they suggest and most believed belief in physiognomy influences treatments requested. Conclusion: The belief in facial physiognomy has a direct impact and needs to be taken into consideration during patient consultation.

The hypertrophied temporalis and masseter muscles give a muscular shaped and bulky contour to the face. Botulinum neurotoxin injection methods are commonly used for facial contouring; however, adverse effects have been reported owing to a lack of delicate anatomical information. The anatomical considerations when injecting botulinum neurotoxin into the temporalis and masseter muscles were reviewed in the present study. Current knowledge on the localization of the botulinum neurotoxin injection point with more recent anatomical dissection and modified Sihler staining procedures was assessed. The authors found that, for the muscles, the injection point can be more precisely demarcated. Optimal injection sites are presented for the temporalis and masseter muscles, and the injection technique is suggested. The authors propose the optimal injection sites in relation to external anatomical landmarks for the frequently injected muscles of the face to facilitate the efficiency of botulinum neurotoxin injections. In addition, these guidelines would aid in more precise practice without the adverse effects of botulinum neurotoxin.
