Here, we synthesized a series of Cu/CeO 2 catalysts with different morphology and size, including Cu/CeO 2 nanospheres (Cu/CeO 2 -S), Cu/CeO 2 nanoparticles (Cu/CeO 2 -P), Cu/CeO 2 nanorods (Cu/CeO 2 -R) and flower-like Cu/CeO 2 microspheres (Cu/CeO 2 -F) to systematically explore the structure-activity relationship in CO oxidation. Crucially, the effect of morphology, crystal size, Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ species, oxygen vacancies derived from the removal of lattice oxygen (O latt ) species in CeO 2 and lattice defect sites on CO activity was revealed through various characterizations. It was clearly discovered that the activity of these catalysts was as follows: Cu/CeO 2 -R > Cu/CeO 2 -P > Cu/CeO 2 -S > Cu/CeO 2 -F, and the Cu/CeO 2 -R catalyst preferentially showed the best catalytic performance with a 90% conversion of CO even at 58 °C, owned the smaller particles size of CeO 2 and CuO, and exhibited the higher concentration of O latt species and oxygen vacancies. Besides, it is also verified that the Cu/CeO 2 -F sample exhibited the larger CeO 2 crystal size (17.14 nm), which led to the lower Cu dispersion and CO conversion, even at 121 °C (T 90 ). Most importantly, we discovered that the amount of surface lattice defect sites was positively related to the reaction rate of CO. Simultaneously, DFT calculation also demonstrated that the introduced oxygen vacancies in CeO 2 could accelerate the oxidation of CO by the alteration of CO adsorption energy. Therefore, the morphology, the crystal size, the content of oxygen vacancies, as well as lattice defects of Cu/CeO 2 catalyst might work together for CO oxidation reaction.

In this paper, mesoporous carbon (meso-C) with three-dimensional mesoporous channels was synthesized through a nanocasting route using three-dimensional mesoporous silica KIT-6 as the template. Mesoporous carbon wrapped Pd-Fe nanocomposite catalysts were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The effects of the experimental conditions, such as pH value, Fe loading content and calcination temperature, on CO oxidation were studied in detail. The prepared Pd-Fe/meso-C catalysts showed excellent catalytic activity after optimizing the experimental conditions. The surface tetravalent Pd content, existing forms of Fe species, surface chemical adsorbed oxygen concentration, and pore channels of mesoporous carbon played vital roles in achieving the highest performance for the Pd-Fe/meso-C catalyst. The reaction pathway was conjectured according to the XPS analysis of the Pd-Fe/meso-C catalysts for CO oxidation, which maybe adhered to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood + redox mechanism. The effect of moisture on CO conversion was investigated, and the superior Pd-Fe/meso-C catalyst could maintain its activity beyond 12 h. This catalyst also showed excellent activity compared to the reported values in the existing literature.

Carbon materials have been widely utilized as supports in different catalytic reactions; however, it has been rarely reported that carbon supports were used in the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds because they have no catalytic activity and poor catalytic stability compared to metal supports. Herein, fabricating optimal carbon supports to facilitate the catalytic oxidation of benzene has become a great concern of research. A novel activated carbon (biomass−HCO) was prepared from different waste biomass via a three-stage route without the participation of harmful chemical reagents. The successful synthesis of C−O bonds and CO bonds through this method could greatly increase oxygen-enriched functional groups and defects of the biomass−HCO surface, which could effectively promote the nucleation and growth of platinum. Benzene oxidation reactions were performed to evaluate the activity of catalysts. The results demonstrated that Pt/biomass−HCO catalyst made the reaction temperature sharply decrease to 160 °C at T 90 . The 150 h on-stream reaction exhibited great thermal stability of Pt/biomass−HCO. The DFT calculations verified the strong interaction between Pt nanoparticles and carbon supports. Moreover, our demonstration of the superior benzene oxidation activity of Pt/ biomass−HCO catalysts revealed that it is feasible to utilize oxygen-enriched biomass carbon as catalytic supports toward the oxidation of volatile organic compounds.
