In 1987, M. K. Wu and Paul Chu discovered Y 1.2 Ba 0.8 CuO 4 (YBCO) with critical temperature (T c ) of 93 K. It has significantly lowered the cost of cooling of a material up to the point where superconductivity set in. Utilizing the cost reduction of attaining superconductivity and the vast amount of research to understand characteristics of high temperature oxide superconducting materials, there has been effort to use a high temperature superconductor as a coated conductor. It is important to characterize the materials precisely for stable performance before commercializing. We used polarized Raman scattering spectroscopy to study structural and stoichiometric information regarding YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x , GdYBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x , and GdBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x produced by three leading groups of producing commercial grade high temperature superconductor coated conductors American Superconductor Corporation, Superpower, and SuNAM.

We report a successful fabrication of GdBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 (GdBCO) coated conductor on the ion-beam assisted deposition (IBAD) MgO template with a new buffer layer of BaZrO 3 (BZO). The BZO films were deposited on the IBAD-MgO template at various substrate temperatures ( S ) and oxygen partial pressures ( O 2 ) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). In the broad ranges of S and O 2 , all BZO layers showed almost uniform in-plane texture (1 of 6 ), implying that BZO is an attractive buffer layer. The surface roughness of BZO layer was sensitive to O 2 but not to S . On the optimally processed BZO buffer layer with 5.1 nm RMS roughness, GdBCO coated conductor deposited at S of 750 C and O 2 of 400 mTorr exhibited 1 of 4.4 , c zero of 90.3 K, and c of 1.35 MA cm 2 (77 K, self-field). This paper reviews recent progress in research and development (R&D) of reactive co-evaporation for high performance REBCO coated conductors in Korea. Two types of reactive co-evaporation methods were developed for the deposition of SmBCO and GdBCO superconducting layers respectively on the IBAD (Ion Beam Assisted Deposition)-MgO template in the Korean coated conductor project. Batch type reactive co-evaporation equipment and its processing were developed for SmBCO coated conductors at Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in conjunction with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and a very high critical current exceeding 1,000 A/cm at 77 K in the self field was achieved through the optimization of deposition parameters. Reel-to-reel type reactive co-evaporation processing with a high conversion rate was also developed, while long length GdBCO coated conductors have been routinely produced by SuNAM Co. The minimum critical current of 422 A/cm-w at 77 K in self field was confirmed for 1 km-long GdBCO tape.
