Fabrication of Binary Sulfonated Poly Ether Sulfone and Sulfonated Polyvinylidene Fluoride‐Co‐Hexafluoro Propylene Blend Membrane as Efficient Electrolyte for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract: Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) is pivotal in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) with enhanced power performances. We reported a sulfonated (poly ether sulfone) (SPES) and sulfonated polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoro propylene (SPVdF-HFP) blend membrane for the PEMFC. We fabricated the SPES/SPVdF-HFP blend membrane via a simple solvent-casting method with 10 or 20% of SPVdF-HFP. It exhibited enhanced proton conductivity and was assigned to the synergism between SPES and SPVdF-HFP. FE-SEM image… Show more

“…The evolution in the layer structure and microstructure of layers with varying the number of layers or layer thicknesses was investigated. By combining a high dielectric constant polymer of PVDF-HFP with super electrochemical properties [22][23][24], and a linear dielectric polymer of PC with low dielectric loss and high breakdown strength, dielectric properties of the obtained films were further investigated. The relationship between the multiscale structure and the final dielectric properties was thus established, and the corresponding mechanisms was elucidated.…”

“…However, a high IEC value causes excessive dimensional change in the membrane along with a high water uptake, which leads to separation of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) during the manufacture and deterioration of fuel cell durability from the wet-dry repetition [ 13 , 14 ]. As mentioned above, various studies have achieved excellent dimensional stability along with high IEC values such as blended membranes [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]; inorganic/organic composite membranes [ 6 , 19 , 20 ]; and the backbone design of comb-shaped [ 21 , 22 , 23 ], branching [ 24 , 25 , 26 ], and cross-linking [ 27 , 28 ].…”
