Fabrication and Wear Resistance of TiO2/Al2O3 Coatings by Micro-arc Oxidation

Abstract: TiO2/Al2O3 composite coatings were prepared on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by micro-arc oxidation in the Na2SiO3-(NaPO3)6-NaAlO2 solution. The growth process reveals that O 2reacts rapidly with Ti 4+ (from substrate) along the reaction channels to form TiO2, and because of the addition of AlO2-, Al2O3 and Al2TiO5 are simultaneously formed. Al2TiO5 is immediately decomposed into rutile TiO2 and α-Al2O3 owing to the high thermal energy caused by discharge. Finally the prepared composite phase coatings are mai… Show more

“…Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) has been used as a critical method for many years to prepare much thicker and harder ceramic coatings on metallic materials. [33]. In addition, the porous Cu-TiO 2 coatings can be fabricated on titanium through MAO process under the constant current density of 20 A/dm 2 for 5 min, and the high stability TiO 2 coating formed during MAO process improved the corrosion resistance of titanium [43].…”

“…It is well known that cermet coatings have high hardness. In industries among all the cermet coatings, tungsten carbides, nickel, chromium and titanium based coatings are widely utilised for their high erosivecorrosive wear resistance [6][7][8][9]. A huge number of research studies have been conducted by the researchers by utilising the tungsten based and nickel based coatings to enhance the erosive wear properties [10][11][12][13].…”

“…The MAO method can be used to form a ceramic coating with TiO 2 as the main component by in-situ oxidation on the titanium alloy. In the MAO process, the composite coatings such as TiO 2 + SiO 2 , TiO 2 + Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 + ZrO 2 , TiO 2 + MoS 2 , TiO 2 + Ag, and TiO 2 + graphite can be formed on the titanium alloy substrate to improve the wear resistance, friction, and oxidation resistance of the titanium alloy by the regulation of the electrolyte composition and addition of solid particles in the electrolyte [14][15][16]. Compared with other surface technologies, the MAO exhibits strong adaptability, simple operation, and low cost, and is environmentally friendly.…”
