Ceramics Coated Metallic Materials: Methods, Properties and Applications

Abstract: Surface coating can allow the bulk materials to remain unchanged, while the surface functionality is engineered to afford a more wanted characteristic. Ceramic coatings are considered as ideal coatings on metal which can significantly improve the surface properties of metal materials including anti-fouling, self-cleaning, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, oil/water separation and biocompatibility. Furthermore, various techniques have been utilized to fabricate a range of different ceramic coatings with mo… Show more

“…For instance, metal alloys are most frequently used in load-bearing applications because of their strength ( Davidson and Mishra, 1992 ), whereas polymers are used as a barrier in the metal-on-metal contact area to reduce friction and wear debris ( Hussain et al, 2020 ). In addition, ceramics are used for good corrosion and wear resistance, and bioactive ceramics are employed for enhancing the material performance by coating ( Zang and Xun, 2021 ). This minireview critically analyzed the potential of biocompatible materials, metallic, ceramic and polymeric materials for implant applications.…”

“…Nanocomposites occupy a major area in the current research. Recent research has focused in particular on improving the physical-chemical properties of the materials on which they are deposited, in order to obtain layers resistant to wear, abrasion, corrosion, active layers for catalysis, with self-lubricating properties or for better biocompatibility in the case of materials with biomedical applications [8]. The field of functional surfaces is in a continuous and rapid expansion, with a huge number of possible combinations between two or more components.…”
