Ceramic materials are widely used in engineering field because of their good physical and chemical properties. The poor mechanical properties of traditional ceramics seriously limit the development of ceramic materials and have attracted extensive attention since its birth. The development of high toughness, light weight, and functional ceramic materials has long been the pursuit of materials scientists. Since ancient times, nature has been the source of all kinds of human technological ideas, engineering principles, and major inventions. The functional structure of biology provides a good research object for the bionic design and preparation of ceramic materials. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the functional structures and mechanisms in nature and biomimetic preparation technology. The purpose of this review is to provide guidance for the functionalized biomimetic design and efficient preparation of ceramic materials. Some typical functional examples in nature are introduced in detail, and several representative biomimetic preparation methods are listed. Finally, the performance and application status of biomimetic ceramics are summarized, and the future development direction of biomimetic ceramic materials is prospected.

The natural design and coupling of biological structures are the root of realizing the high strength, toughness, and unique functional properties of biomaterials. Advanced architecture design is applied to many materials, including metal materials, inorganic nonmetallic materials, polymer materials, and so on. To improve the performance of advanced materials, the designed architecture can be enhanced by bionics of biological structure, optimization of structural parameters, and coupling of multiple types of structures. Herein, the progress of structural materials is reviewed, the strengthening mechanisms of different types of structures are highlighted, and the impact of architecture design on the performance of advanced materials is discussed. Architecture design can improve the properties of materials at the micro level, such as mechanical, electrical, and thermal conductivity. The synergistic effect of structure makes traditional materials move toward advanced functional materials, thus enriching the macroproperties of materials. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of structural innovation of advanced materials in improving material properties are discussed.

Nano‐biocomposites of inorganic and organic components wereprepared to produce long‐persistent phosphorescent artificial nacre‐like materials. Biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), graphene oxide (GO), and nanoparticles (13–20 nm) of lanthanide‐doped aluminate pigment (NLAP) were used in a simple production procedure of an organic/inorganic hybrid nano‐biocomposite. Both polylactic acid and GO nanosheets were chemically modified to form covalent and hydrogen bonding. The high toughness, good tensile strength, and great endurance of those bonds were achieved by their interactions at the interfaces. Long‐persistent and reversible photoluminescence was shown by the prepared nacre substrates. Upon excitation at 365 nm, the nacre substrates generated an emission peak at 517 nm. When ultraviolet light was shone on luminescent nacres, they displayed a bright green colour. The high superhydrophobicity of the generated nacres was obtained without altering their mechanical characteristics.
