In this work we present the structural properties and stoichiometry analysis of thin films of lead iodide (PbI 2 ). This material is a very promising semiconductor material for the development of X-ray detectors in digital medical imaging. An alternative deposition method called Spray Pyrolysis was used. We discuss the main advantages and limitations of the deposition process comparing three different starting material powders. Extra iodine atmosphere during deposition and the effect of post-deposition thermal treatment is also discussed. The structural properties were studied by X-ray diffraction, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) and stoichiometry analysis were performed using Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS).

Abstract. In this study, lead iodide (PbI 2 ) thin films were deposited on glass substrates by spin coating a solution of 0.2 M PbI 2 dissolved in dimethylformamide, varying the deposition time and the spin speed. The thickness of the thin films decreased with increase in spin speed and deposition time, as examined by profilometry measurements. The structure, morphology, optical and electrical properties of the thin films were analysed using various techniques. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the thin films possessed hexagonal structures. The thin films were grown highly oriented to [001] direction of the hexagonal lattice. Raman peaks detected at 96 and 136 cm −1 were corresponding to the characteristic vibration modes of PbI 2 . The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy detected the presence of Pb and I with core level binding energies corresponding to that in PbI 2 . Atomic force microcopy showed smooth and compact morphology of the thin films. From UV-Vis transmittance and reflectance spectral analysis, the bandgap of the thin films ∼2.3 eV was evaluated. The dark conductivity of the thin films was computed and the value decreased as the deposition time and spin speed increased.

ResumoPor ser um semicondutor de elevado número atômico, elevada densidade de massa e largo gap de energia, o brometo de tálio (TlBr) é um material promissor para a detecção da radiação ionizante à temperatura ambiente. Entretanto, existem poucos trabalhos relacionados ao estudo deste material sob forma de filme fino policristalino para produção em grandes áreas (∼ 40 x 40 cm 2 ) como desejado para aplicações médicas. Neste trabalho, as técnicas de spray pyrolysis e evaporação térmica foram avaliadas como métodos alternativos para a deposição de filmes de TlBr policristalinos. Ambas as técnicas apresentam relativo baixo custo e podem ser expandidas para grandes áreas. O objetivo deste trabalho é o estudo da influência das principais condições de crescimento dos filmes de TlBr nas suas propriedades estruturais, ópticas e elétricas finais.Para os filmes produzidos por spray pyrolysis água mili-Q foi utilizada como solvente. A solução (0,10 g de TlBr dissolvidos em 100 g de água) foi agitada à temperatura de 70°C. Cada deposição foi realizada mantendo os substratos (1cm 2 ) à temperatura de 100ºC, com um fluxo de nitrogênio (N 2 ) de 8 l/min e um fluxo de solução de aproximadamente 1/90 (ml/s). A distância bico de spray-substrato utilizada foi de 19 cm.Os filmes de TlBr evaporados foram crescidos pela evaporação térmica resistiva do material a partir de um cadinho de tungstênio. A temperatura do substrato foi avaliada desde a temperatura ambiente até 200°C. A separação substrato-superfície de evaporação, h, e o número de deposições por filme, n, também foram variados no intervalo de 3 a 9 cm e 1 a 4, respectivamente.A estrutura dos filmes foi investigada por Difração de Raios X (DRX), a morfologia por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e a composição através da Espectroscopia de Dispersão de Energia (EDS). Experimentos ópticos de transmitância em função do comprimento de onda foram realizados para estimar o gap óptico dos filmes. As resistividades foram medidas a partir de experimentos de corrente elétrica em função da diferença de potencial aplicada. A corrente de escuro foi comparada à corrente sob iluminação com uma lâmpada fluorescente (20 watts). Por fim, algumas amostras selecionadas foram expostas aos raios X na faixa de diagnóstico mamográfico.As melhores propriedades foram obtidas para os filmes crescidos por evaporação térmica resistiva. Essa técnica permitiu a obtenção de filmes com espessura de até aproximadamente 28 µm a partir de uma única deposição de 12 minutos.
