Fabric softeners and softness perception

Abstract: In order to evaluate the efficiency of various commercial chemical fabric softeners, a technique of obtaining subjective assessment known as 'magnitude estimation' was used to estimate the fabric softness. Particular emphasis was given to subjective scaling and limits of human perception. Comparison between softness and compression (a physical measure) was demonstrated.

“…(Cherkassky et al 2010a,b;Wang et al 2011;McGregor et al 2015) According to the definition put forward by the Textile Institute in 1975, fabric tactile properties come from the 'subjective assessment of a textile material obtained from the sense of touch' . (Ali et al 1994) It is reasonable to believe that the most direct and reliable way to study fabric tactile properties is from the perspective of human perception.…”

“…Actually, 'fabric hand' was defined by the Textile Institute in 1975 as 'the subjective assessment of a textile material obtained from the sense of touch' [4]. Besides, as was stated by Fritz [5], 'people are capable of making objective, quantitatively, and repeatable assessments of their sensations'.…”

“…The properties linked to the sense of touch are essential in the fabric domain as they have a strong impact on the textile quality, which the consumers perceive. As of 1975, the Textile Institute (Ali and Begum ) defined the term “fabric handle” as “the subjective assessment of the textile material obtained from the sense of touch.” The assessment of these performances called “hand evaluation” was originally based on an expert approach, which admittedly combined sensibility and experience (Civille and Dus ). Further instrumental methods that seemed to allow a more objective study of the technical performances of fabrics were then developed (Kawabata and Niwa ).…”
