Whereas most research has focused on the negative aspects of touch in the workplace (i.e. sexual harassment), this study focuses upon the positive use of touch. In an effort to explain individual differences in the use of workplace touch, three sequential studies are used to introduce the concepts of workplace touch self-efficacy and workplace touch initiation anxiety. In Study 1 we develop scales to assess the constructs. Study 2 provides an initial examination of the construct validity of the measures developed in Study 1. Results of Study 3 indicate that supervisor reports of touch self-efficacy and physiological touch anxiety are related to subordinate reports of supervisor touch. Additionally, results show that supervisor use of touch is related to several indicators of supervisor social effectiveness. Finally, sex of the supervisor appears to play a role in workplace touch as female supervisors report less touch anxiety, greater touch self-efficacy and more use of touch than male supervisors.

The use of the personality trait five-factor model in communication research is very limited so far. In the present study the focus is on nonverbal correlations to personality traits. It was possible to identify nonverbal patterns in relation to personality traits. The extraversion dimension is associated with both a contact dimension (extraverts stand closer, engage in mutual gaze) and an expressiveness dimension (extraverts prefer face-to-face interaction, a varied tone of voice, varied gestures and facial expressions). The openness dimension is associated with low context (verbal, direct and explicit communication relying on context to a low degree). The agreeableness dimension is associated with high context (indirect, implicit and nonverbal communication style relying strongly on context).

Media richness, the degree to which a specific media transmits information in multiple channels, is an important concept as the number of available multimedia communication methods increases regularly. Individuals differ in their preferences for media richness which may influence their choice of communication multimedia in a given situation. These preferences can influence how successful their communication efforts will be. This exploratory study of 299 adults (ages 16-84) with at least a basic ability to compute examines the relationship between multimedia preference and age, gender, and personality traits. Males and people with higher levels of extraversion and agreeableness were found to have a higher preference for media richness. Age was not a significant predictor of media richness preference.
