Eyelid splitting with follicular extirpation using a monopolar cautery for the treatment of trichiasis and distichiasis

Abstract: Eyelid splitting coupled with follicular extirpation via cautery with a monopolar needle, a procedure which requires no sutures, constitutes a simple and effective method for the treatment of both trichiasis and distichiasis and is associated with favorable functional and cosmetic results.

“…Recurrence rates vary by treatment modality, with no recurrence reported in human patients following eyelash trephination (McCracken et al . 2006), >80% resolution following initial treatment with both electrocautery (Chi et al . 2007) and cryotherapy (Delaney and Rogers 1984), and >95% resolution following a second course of either therapy.…”

“…Use of bipolar diathermy for the above procedure is yet to be reported in literature. Some prefer to do the same surgery with a monopolar cautery, [7] but cosmesis is not as rewarding.…”

“…Distichiasis is commonly described in man and dogs but in cats and horses it is very uncommon [1,[5][6][7][8][9][10]. In humans, distichiasis can be congenital or acquired in the setting of chronic inflammation and following chemical injuries of the eyelid [9,11]. Congenital distichiasis can occur sporadically or as an autosomal dominant condition [10,11].…”
