Friction and wear tests were performed on five Cu-based materials and three polyether ether ketone (PEEK)-based composites sliding against 17-4PH and 42CrMo4 coated with tungsten carbide-reinforced Ni-based coating. Two types of pin-on-disk specimens were used to represent the slipper/eccentric drive and piston/sleeve gap seal tribo-pairs in water hydraulic radial piston pumps. The experimental results showed that the QSn8-0.3 slipper material exhibited the highest steady-state friction coefficients for sliding against both 17-4PH (0.156) and coated-42CrMo4 (0.894). Glass fiber-reinforced PEEK exhibited the highest steady-state friction coefficients for sliding against the two specimens (0.540 and 0.420). The ZCuPb15Sn8/17-4PH showed the highest wear rate for the representative slipper/eccentric drive tribo-pair (26.86 × 10−6 mm/Nm); glass fiber-reinforced PEEK/17-4PH showed the highest wear rate for the representative piston/sleeve gap seal tribo-pair (46.91 × 10−6mm/Nm). The wear mechanisms of the two types of tribo-pairs were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, profilometry, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyses. Furthermore, the effects of hardness, pv values, coating, and reinforcement on the tribological behavior of the two types of tribo-pairs were analyzed.

For ultrahigh-pressure piston pumps, in the reciprocating action of the piston, the fretting between the static face seal and the mating surface occurs with the change of the pressure in the piston chamber. This phenomenon will seriously affect the service life of the seal ring and lead to the failure of the pump. However, the failure of static seals used to seal ultrahigh-pressures is usually studied from the directions of shear, stress, or rubber material. These studies cannot explain the failure phenomenon of the sealing ring found in our experiment. This paper analyzed the failure of the face seal ring in a piston pump with a maximum pressure of 120 MPa. A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model was established based on the Mooney-Rivlin constitutive relation of the rubber material, and the fretting conditions of the sealing ring were analyzed. Combined with the wear scars observed by the scanning electron microscope the face seal ring’s dynamic failure mechanism on the ultrahigh-pressure piston pump was determined. A better sealing scheme was proposed and verified by the duration test of the pump, which provided a basis for the design of the sealing of the ultrahigh-pressure fluid with high-frequency fluctuations.

The purpose of work – development of practical recommendations for modernization of hydraulic cylinders, widely used in irrigation and drainage and other agricultural equipment design created at the invention level (RU2702205) and the calculations to substantiate its basic geometric parameters. Research methods – to achieve the goal, a modern method of calculating the forces created by the magnetic fields of permanent magnets used in sealing devices of hydraulic cylinder rods was used; practical recommendations are given on the need to use such devices in practice. Research results and novelty – research results are recommended by both domestic and foreign research institutes, design and production structures of agricultural engineering for further study, refinement and its possible practical implementation. Conclusions – analyzing the proposed directions for the modernization of sealing devices of hydraulic cylinder rods, it can be concluded that the developed technical solution allows to increase the operational reliability of hydraulic equipment not only for irrigation and drainage, but also for other purpose of agricultural machinery.
