Extremity Soft Tissue Sarcoma: Factors Predictive of Local Recurrence and Survival

Abstract: This study suggests that local control of extremity soft tissue sarcoma is improved by radical surgery and by the addition of radiotherapy when more conservative procedures are used. Overall survival appeared to be largely determined by patient (age, recurrent presentation) and tumour characteristics (grade, size).

“…44 Several studies have also shown that there is no difference in survival between patients who presented with primary sarcoma and those presenting initially with local recurrence. 38,45 The prognostic factors for distant metastases and survival in our study were tumor size, histologic grade, and time to local recurrence. Tumor size and histologic grade are the two most important prognostic factors for survival that have been consistently identified in primary soft tissue sarcomas.…”

“…Negative surgical margin, low histologic grade, and use of radiotherapy are the most important factors in achieving local disease control [6,8,10,12,23,27,30,33]. However, the effect of positive margin and local recurrence as independent prognostic factors for metastasis-free survival and overall survival is still a matter of debate [9,10,16,21,23,25,28,29].…”
