Extreme weather events in developing countries and related injuries and mental health disorders - a systematic review

Abstract: BackgroundDue to climate change, extreme weather events have an incremental impact on human health. Injuries and mental health disorders are a particular burden of disease, which is broadly investigated in high income countries. Most distressed populations are, however, those in developing countries. Therefore, this study investigates mental and physical health impacts arising from extreme weather events in these populations.MethodPost-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), injury [primary outcomes], anxiety and de… Show more

“…Population displacement is another hardship that is predicted to rise in frequency because of climate change. The demographic and socioeconomic impacts of an increase in forced population displacements would surely result in higher rates of stress-related psychiatric disorders [ 52 ]. Additionally, different countries show heterogeneous levels of preparedness to provide the necessary long-term assistance to potentially affected populations [ 53 ].…”

“…Another experimental use for the database is for those who need psychotherapeutic intervention after a natural disaster experience, including the traumatic ones. In the latter case, the literature consistently suggests that there are immediate and long-term consequences for mental health and human development after natural disasters [ 5 7 ]. Therefore, we expect that these inquiries assist in the creation of important public health policies and mitigation actions, especially in socially disadvantaged populations [ 7 , 8 ].…”

“…Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts Conceptualization: Access to assistive products is important for strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity for people with impairments, especially in the event of natural disasters, a predictable outcome of global climate change. There is also an increased incidence of disease and injury as a result of extreme weather events, which leads to an increased need for assistive products (Rataj et al, [28]). Target 13.1 : Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries. Example: The Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction was hailed by participants as the first international meeting of its kind to provide a wide range of accessibility features, in order to ensure that people with disabilities are consulted on plans and strategies for managing disaster risk. Closed captioning, sign language interpretation, wheelchair accessible venues and transport, accessible documents and Braille displays enabled more than 200 people with impairments to actively participate as delegates, speakers, panellists, and contributors (UNISDR, [29]). SDG 14.…”
