Extraversion, neuroticism, and sexual behavior: Interrelationships in a sample of young men

Abstract: In his theory on sexuality and personality Eysenck proposed a positive correlation between extraversion and intensified sexual behavior and between neuroticism and problems in sexual behavior. An earlier study with married persons did not show any of these correlations. It was hypothesized that this connection exists only for unmarried persons who are not engaged in long-lasting relationships, because in the latter the quality of the relationship determines the sexual interaction. Within a sample of young unma… Show more

“…Specifically, it is possible that any relationships between altruism and mating success may be an artefact of Big Five personality dimensions, which have been shown cross-culturally to correlate with altruism (Johnson et al, 1989). For example, extraversion has been consistently linked to increased sexual behaviour across many (but not all) world regions (Schenk & Pfrang, 1986;Schmitt, 2004). Participant age was also controlled for given previous associations with number of sex partners in university samples (Arnocky et al, 2013).…”

“…In fact, over the past years, only a few clinicians have proposed the existence of specific personality traits which could make some men more susceptible to the development of sexual difficulties. In a pioneer study in the field, Eysenck [1] demonstrated that men experiencing sexual difficulties presented higher levels of neuroticism when compared to sexually healthy men, but these results were not consistently replicated in subsequent studies [2–5]. Using the Neuroticism‐Extroversion‐Openness (NEO)‐Personality Inventory [6,7], a validated and widely used measure for personality assessment, Fagan and colleagues [8] demonstrated an association between elevated neuroticism and sexual dysfunction in men.…”

“…In human sexuality, empirical studies have been conducted on the role of personality traits in sexual disorders (Fagan et al, 1991;Quinta-Gomes & Nobre, 2011), sexual functioning (Fisher & McNulty, 2008;Harris, Cherkas, Kato, Heiman, & Spector, 2008), sexual behavior (Férnandez & Castro, 2003;Schenk & Pfrang, 1986;Turchik, Garske, Probst, & Irvin, 2010), sexual attitudes (Heaven, Fitzpatrick, Craig, Kelly, & Sebar, 2000), and sexual cognitions (Moyano & Sierra, 2013). More specifically, according to Nobre's Cognitive-Emotional Model of Sexual Dysfunction, personality traits, namely neuroticism and extraversion may act as vulnerability factors for the development and maintenance of sexual dysfunctions, in heterosexual men and women (Nobre, 2013;Soares & Nobre, 2012).…”
