“…Secondly, the size of AVM may be such as to exert pressure upon certain parts of the brain (mass eff ect). Finally, a large volume of blood shunted through the AVM may result in so-called 'steal phenomenon' that leads to temporary or permanent ischemia of neuronal structures 17,18,32 . Th e concept of 'steal phenomenon' has been recently challenged 29 .…”

“…In two patients, the presence of AVM was detected just after its rupture and subsequent subarachnoid hemorrhage. Selective embolization was performed in one patient with tremor, but without clinical improvement 17 . Krauss et al report on six patients, of which one had hemidystonia caused by AVM in the contralateral frontoparietal lobe.…”

“…A distonia e outros distúrbios do movimento associadas à MAV, apesar de raros, têm sido descritos. Lobo-Antunes et al 7 descreveram quatro pacientes com distonia associada à MAV, tendo as seguintes distribuições: braço (1 caso), pescoço (2 casos) e mão esquerda (1 caso). Shaw et al 8 citaram um paciente com acometimento do pescoço.…”

“…In a recent review of 1,000 cases reported by vari ous workers, Lobo-Antones et al (1974) cite only 6 cases in whom such movements were present. In 1 patient with an unspecified deepseated malformation (Patterson and McKissock, 1956) they were hemilateral athetoid move ments; in the case of Shaw et al (1972), a malformation supplied by the middle cerebral artery gave rise to spastic torticollis; the other 4 cases were observed and carefully studied by Lobo- Antones et al (1974). The first, with a malformation fed by the anterior choroid ar tery and by the perforating branches of the posterior communicating artery and posterior cerebral artery, presented athetoid-type move ments of the contralateral upper limb followed some time later by tremor and dystonia.…”

“…2 of the 4 cases (first and second) observed by Lobo-Antones et al (1974) had acute hem orrhages, which called for angiographic study. In all cases except the third, the hyperkinesias were accompanied by other neurological signs (pyramidal signs, paralysis of the oculomotor or other cranial nerves, disturbed coordination of movement) which worsened after the acute episodes.…”
