Extracutaneous Malignant Melanomas

Abstract: Extracutaneous malignant melanomas are rare tumors with vexing clinical presentation and grim prognosis. Only 4%-5% of all primary melanomas do not arise from the skin. These tumors are almost uniformly fatal, even in 2006. Although a fairly good number of these lesions were reported in the literature, the lack of a side-by-side analysis of these studies has resulted in tentative conclusions that merely offer a first glimpse at the clinicopathologic diversity of these lesions. To remedy this issue, this articl… Show more

“…The association between pigmentation disorders and the nervous system has also been noted in some cases of extraepidermal melanoma tumors appearing only within the nerve sheaths and ganglia, without any pigmentation abnormalities at the skin level [126]. For instance, pigmented paragangliomas have been observed along the vagal trunk, in the adrenal gland, and in the uterus, spine, retroperitoneum, bladder, mediastinum, and orbit [127].…”

“…This is unusual as only 4-5% of melanomas arise from noncutaneous sites. 24 Melanoma was also the most common histology to involve the axilla and the most common metastatic lesion found in men. Owing to its wide range of morphologic appearances, it may be easily mistaken for a primary breast cancer.…”

“…25 The risk factors cited are family history, familial predisposition genes, precursor nevi, childhood sunburn, and lack of skin pigmentation. 11,25 Although melanomas are most commonly found in skin, any tissue that has melanin can be a site of tumor development.…”
