Extraction of Opuntia dillenii Haw. Polysaccharides and Their Antioxidant Activities

Abstract: Abstract:Use of natural polysaccharides in medicine and food has wide interest in research. In this study, we extracted and purified some polysaccharides from cactus Opuntia dillenii Haw. (ODP). Some preliminary functions of these products were characterized. Under the optimal purification conditions, the yield of ODP extracted from the 2-4 month-old Opuntia dillenii Haw. (T-ODP) was 30.60% ± 0.40%, higher than that of ODP from the 5-10 month-old materials (O-ODP) (18.97% ± 0.58%). The extracted ODP was purifi… Show more

“…However, CPP70 exhibited stronger scavenging activity against superoxide, DPPH and hydroxyl radicals, when compared with CPP85 [ 24 ]. Many variables may affect the antioxidant activities of polysaccharides, including their molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, conformation, degree, and sulfate distribution pattern [ 23 , 45 ]. Therefore, a promising Chlorella -Arc polysaccharides and its conspicuous antioxidant activity deserved further investigation.…”

“…Polysaccharides have been recognized as one of the substances used worldwide in food preparation and processing as thickeners, emulsifiers, or stabilizers (Hu, Nie, Li, Wang, & Xie, 2017). Numerous studies have reported that polysaccharides have anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities (Chen, Yao, et al, 2016;Li, Yuan, Zhou, Zeng, & Lu, 2016;Ou, Yu, Zhang, & Zhu, 2016;Wang, Liu, Huang, & Zhang, 2016). Certain studies have shown that aqueous and ethanol extracts of the rhizome of Osmunda japonica Thunb possess antifungal activity (Zhu et al, 2013).…”

“…TNF‐α, iNOS, COX‐2, IL‐6, IL‐8 and IL‐10 are well‐known inflammatory cytokines with increased expression in inflamed tissue. Studies have shown that ODP has anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti‐tumor effects [20,21] . We hypothesized that ODP could alleviate the inflammatory damage in HaCaT cells.…”
