Abstract:The arctic strain of Chlorella sp. (Chlorella-Arc) exists in the coldest and driest arctic ecosystems, and it is a new resource of active polysaccharides. The extraction of crude polysaccharide from Chlorella-Arc was optimized using the response surface methodology. A crude polysaccharide yield of approximately 9.62 ± 0.11% dry weight was obtained under these optimized conditions. Three fractions (P-I, P-II, and P-III) were present after purification by 2-diethylaminoethanol Sepharose Fast Flow and Sephadex G-100 chromatography. The P-IIa fraction demonstrated significant antioxidant activities. Moreover, P-IIa was an α-and β-type heteropolysaccharide with a pyran group and contained variable amounts of rhamnose, arabinose, glucose, and galactose based on fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, and 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. Production of high amounts of polysaccharide may allow further exploration of the microalgae Chlorella-Arc as a natural antioxidant.

Polysaccharides from Osmunda japonica Thunb (Op) exhibit a wide range of biological activities including antibacterial, anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor effects. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a type of cellulose derivative that can form dense films. CMC can slow the respiratory transpiration of tomatoes and reduce water evaporation. Coatings of CMC (0.7% concentration) with various levels of Op (0.02%, 0.04%, 0.06%, 0.08%, and 0.1%) were used to preserve tomatoes at room temperature. The treatment, weight loss, hardness, titratable acidity (TA), respiratory intensity, and concentrations of ascorbic acid, polyphenol oxidase, and malondialdehyde (MDA) were evaluated in tomatoes after 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 days of storage. Compared with untreated tomatoes, the tomatoes with Op‐incorporated CMC coatings had reduced respiratory intensity, weight loss and ascorbic acid loss, increased TA, controlled MDA, and inhibited the decay of tomatoes. Therefore, the use of Op‐incorporated CMC coatings extended the shelf life and maintained the quality of postharvest tomatoes. Practical applications In the past decades, the use of edible coatings has attracted widespread interest in extending the shelf life of particularly perishable foods. Currently, applications of edible coatings have been proven to be promising as a tool to improve the quality and extend the shelf life of various fruits. But there have been no reports on the effect of Op‐incorporated CMC treatment on the postharvest quality of tomatoes during storage. The purpose of this work is to investigate the efficiency of Op‐incorporated CMC treatment to extend shelf life and provide theoretical guidance for the preservation of tomatoes.

Opuntia milpa alta polysaccharides (ODP) are bioactive compounds extracted from Opuntia milpa alta and widely used in the treatment of diseases, but the therapeutic mechanism of ODP on inflammatory injury remains unclear. Therefore, this study explores the effects and mechanisms of ODP in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation of human keratinocytes (HaCaT). In this experiment, ODP was extracted via the water extraction and fermentation methods, respectively. LPS was then used to induce inflammatory damage in HaCaT cells, and the stimulated cells were treated with different concentrations of ODP. Cell viability was detected by MTT assay, and the concentrations of COX-2, iNOS, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Changes in inflammatory cytokines and related mRNA expression were observed to assess LPS-induced cell damage. In the experiment, it was found that the LPS stimulation of HaCaT cells can induce cellular inflammatory response, reduce cell viability, increase cell apoptosis and increase the expression of COX-2, iNOS, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α. However, the experimental data shows that ODP can reverse the above results by increasing cell viability, inhibiting cell apoptosis, reducing the expression of the above genes and inactivating antioxidant pathways, which revealed the specific mechanism of ODP repairing LPS-induced inflammatory damage to Hacat cell. In addition, The experimental results showed that fermentation could improve the anti-inflammatory effect of ODP. In conclusion, our experimental results indicate that ODP fermented by lactic acid bacteria can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent.
