In this study, to improve the efficiency of an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS), a different scenario has been proposed. To this purpose, an endeavor has been undertaken to find a nanoparticle suitable for designing a process of favorable economic separation as well as to unravel the mechanism of the partitioning of nisin along with nanoparticle. First, the capabilities of several different nanoparticles were assessed. These nanoparticles were regarded as additives apt to improve nisin partitioning in the ATPS containing polyethylene glycol (with different molecular weights) and a mixture of potassium hydrogen phosphate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate. The impact of the addition of the modified nanographite (in very small amounts) on the improvement of the nisin partition coefficient in polymer/salt ATPS was quite remarkable. The results showed that the partition coefficient of nisin was increased up to 610% (eight times more than that of the ATPS without nanoparticles) in PEG 10 000 + KH2PO4/K2HPO4 + H2O. The mechanism of the partitioning of nisin along with nanoparticle dominating the boost in the partition coefficient was explained by the structural investigations.

The distinct features of ATPSs (aqueous two-phase systems) have made it possible to promote the extraction efficiency of biomolecules. The purpose of this study is to discover an appropriate nanoparticle to design an economical optimal separation process, and to understand the underlying molecular mechanism which allows the partitioning of vanillin as a phenolic compound using nanoparticle-based ATPSs. To this aim, the capabilities of several different nanoparticles were investigated as additives for boosting the partition coefficient of vanillin in two different ATPSs made up of polyethylene glycol and sodium sulfate/polyethylene glycol and dextran. Also, in an attempt to explain the salting-out effect, the NRTL (Non-random Two Liquid) thermodynamic model was applied. The impact of very small amounts of modified carbon nanotubes on the enhancement of the partition coefficient of vanillin in the ATPS consisting of the biocompatible polymer(s) and salt was quite remarkable. The results showed that the partition coefficient of vanillin grew by almost 127 percent compared to the system without nanoparticle. The molecular mechanism underlying the increase in the partition coefficient was interpreted by taking advantage of structural analyses.

For long time ago that red beetroot (betalains) has been used as food colouring agent. The development of the organic synthesis led to the production of cheaper food synthetic colorants derived from aniline and other organic compounds that also presenting higher chemical stability and tinctorial strength than natural ones. However, consumers' growing interest in natural products shifted the research goal towards the natural colorants with the objective to improve their chemical stability in diverse food matrices and to find less time‐consuming and more environmental friendly techniques of extraction. Beyond the colouring property of betalains, they exhibit beneficial properties for human health, although their transformations in the organism do not permit explain such biological properties, unless their metabolites also possess activity. This is other research field that starts increasing. Plant and microorganism biotechnology can be a tool for obtaining new natural betalains as well as for enlightening their biosynthetic pathways.
