Extraction of Alumina from Nawan Kaolin by Acid Leaching

Abstract: This paper investigated the production of alumina from Nawan kaolin by acid leaching with sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Kaolin was calcined at 850°C and was leached with 6 M acid at 90°C, 5M NaOH followed by HCl solutions were added to the leaching liquor, and the precipitated aluminum hydroxide was converted to alumina by calcination at 900°C. Materials were characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM techniques. The alumina extraction percent was determined at different leaching times (30-180 min) and solid/liqui… Show more

“…In addition, two characteristic peaks are observed at wavenumbers 1600 cm −1 and 3400 cm −1 . Those two peaks respectively correspond to –OH groups bending mode and hydroxyl group (–OH) stretching mode of the absorbed water [ 48 ]. The spectrum of ABN is mainly dominated by the characteristic h -BN peak comparable to that of the h -BN spectrum.…”

“…At the same time, the pozzolanic additives react with Ca(OH) 2 during mortar-production process and form the calcium silicatehydrate (CSH), a material chemically more resistant with more refined structure of micropores (Roy et al 2001;Ghrici et al 2006;Pesce 2010). This type of material may cause the resistance in diffusion and contact between leaching agent and leaching nucleus (Tantawy and Alomari 2019) and delay the decomposition (Yang et al 2018). These properties together, the reactivity of clay minerals and new chemical bonds between e.g.…”

“…In the case of MK, the peaks observed at 694 and 792 cm À1 are attributed to the symmetric stretching vibration of Si-O-T (T ¼ Al or Si) while the peak at 1090 cm À1 corresponds to the asymmetric stretching vibration of Si-O-T (T ¼ Al or Si). [42][43][44] Moreover, the -OH stretching vibration peak at 3440 cm À1 can be due to the defective dehydroxylation of kaolin during the calcination process. 43 Meanwhile, the spectrum of MK-GO also exhibited two other peaks at 1648 and 2925 cm À1 which mainly can be attributed to the sp 2 hybridized C]C bond and C-H bond in the structure of GO, respectively.…”
