Extraction, Characterization, and Anticoagulant Activity of a Sulfated Polysaccharide from Bursatella leachii Viscera

Abstract: Bioactive compounds for drug discovery are increasingly extracted and purified from natural sources including marine organisms. Heparin is a therapeutic agent that has been used for several decades as an anticoagulant. However, heparin is known to cause many undesirable complications such as thrombocytopenia and risk of hemorrhage. Hence, there is a need to find alternatives to current widely used anticoagulant drugs. Here, we extract a sulfated polysaccharide from sea hare, that is, Bursatella leachii viscera… Show more

“…The clinical use of LMWH and ultra‐low molecular weight HP may also result in the risk of bleeding due to overdosing 85 . Caution in the widespread use of UFH and its derivatives, both in the clinic and research settings, should be taken 18,50,60,63,77,80,113,281 . Recently, Liu et al pointed out that thrombocytopenia induced by the use of HP represents a high mortality risk in critically ill COVID‐19 patients 8,119 …”

“…The FTIR spectra of proteinized and deproteinized M. esculenta crude polysaccharides are presented in Figure 1 a,b, respectively. In Figure 1 a, the peaks at 3267 cm −1 in the proteinized polysaccharides, and 3427 cm −1 in the deproteinized polysaccharides FTIR spectrum of M. esculenta , revealed the existence of hydroxyl groups [ 39 ]. These bands come from the stretching of the hydroxyl groups.…”

“…Based on the ability to separate and detect a wide range of metabolites, LC-MS is one of the most widely used tools for carrying out metabolite profiling studies [82][83][84][85][86]. LC-MS combines HPLC and mass spectrometry, and provides a powerful analytical tool for the separation, identification, and quantification of metabolites in a studied sample [65,[87][88][89][90]. HPLC separates molecules based on different physical and chemical properties such as charge, polarity, molecular size, and affinity towards column matrices [91][92][93][94].…”
