Isolation, Characterization, and Medicinal Potential of Polysaccharides of Morchella esculenta

Abstract: Mushroom polysaccharides are active medicinal compounds that possess immune-modulatory and anticancer properties. Currently, the mushroom polysaccharides krestin, lentinan, and polysaccharopeptides are used as anticancer drugs. They are an unexplored source of natural products with huge potential in both the medicinal and nutraceutical industries. The northern parts of Pakistan have a rich biodiversity of mushrooms that grow during different seasons of the year. Here we selected an edible Morchella esculenta (… Show more

“…In 2019, Deveci and colleagues reported that a polysaccharide obtained from Pleurotus ostreatus, a mushroom tree, exhibited significant inhibitory activity against BChE [172]. Badshah and colleagues reported that polysaccharides isolated from a wide range of mushrooms, which contain glucans, krestin, and lentinan, have significant AChE and BChE inhibitory activity and are being regarded as novel drug therapies for the management of AD and PD [173,174]. Also Badshah and colleagues have extracted mushroom polysaccharides from M. esculenta.…”

“…This polysaccharide's deproteinized form has shown moderate free antioxidant activity but exhibited substantial AChE and BChE inhibitory properties. As a result, these polysaccharides are considered new therapeutic candidates for the treatment of AD and PD [174]. Another class of natural polysaccharides obtained from algae include fucoidans and fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides such as glucose, mannose, galactose, and uronic acids [175].…”

“…Although its use is limited by its high hydrophilicity and, in turn, its low membrane permeability [ 41 ], the existence of an inhibitor already in use as a dietary supplement could more rapidly direct antiseptic and anti-inflammatory drugs to ACLY. HCA fits into the wide range of natural compounds of pivotal importance for current disease treatments [ 55 , 56 ].…”

“…Morchella esculenta is a mushroom which contains polysaccharides, mainly β-glucans with many properties. During a study in 2021 Badshah et al [ 156 ] have decided to define the association between free radical scavenging and AChE activity of two forms of these polysaccharides, proteinized and deproteinized. Their capability to inhibit AChE was compared with galanthamine as a reference standard.…”
