Phytol (PYT) is a diterpene member of the long-chain unsaturated acyclic alcohols. PYT and some of its derivatives, including phytanic acid (PA), exert a wide range of biological effects. PYT is a valuable essential oil (EO) used as a fragrance and a potential candidate for a broad range of applications in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry. There is ample evidence that PA may play a crucial role in the development of pathophysiological states. Focusing on PYT and some of its most relevant derivatives, here we present a systematic review of reported biological activities, along with their underlying mechanism of action. Recent investigations with PYT demonstrated anxiolytic, metabolism-modulating, cytotoxic, antioxidant, autophagy- and apoptosis-inducing, antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, immune-modulating, and antimicrobial effects. PPARs- and NF-κB-mediated activities are also discussed as mechanisms responsible for some of the bioactivities of PYT. The overall goal of this review is to discuss recent findings pertaining to PYT biological activities and its possible applications.

Substituted pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine ligands were synthesized by cyclization, using 3-(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-5-amine with substituted enones (3-phenyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one) in presence of KOH and DMF as solvent to form cyclic aromatic compounds. The substituted pyrazolo[1,5-a] pyrimidine based binuclear Pt II complexes containing neutral tetradentated ligands have general formula [Pt 2 (5a-5f)Cl 4 ], (where, (5a -5f) = pyrazolo[1,5-a] pyrimidine ligand). This compounds were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic method like elemental analyses, UV-Visible, FT-IR, EDX, TGA, molar conductivity, magnetic susceptibility measurements, mass spectroscopy, 1 H and 13 C NMR method. The square planar geometry was predicted by electronic spectral study. All Pt II compounds were evaluated by antimicrobial assay, in vitro brine shrimp assay, in vivo cellular level bioassay using S. Pombe cells and anti-tuberculosis study. LC 50 (50% lethal concentration) values of compounds are observed between 6.450 -102.07 μg/mL. UV-vis absorption titration, competitive displacement assay, molecular docking and viscosity measurement were carried out to examine the binding type and binding strength of complexes. The binding studies suggest partial intercalative binding mode of the complexes and the observed binding constant (K b ) values are found in the order of 6d > 6b > 6c > 6a > 6e > 6 f. The anti-proliferative cytotoxicity of the synthesized Pt II complexes (6a-6f) were tested against the HCT-116 (Human Colorectal Carcinoma) cancer cell line.

Hippuris vulgaris, also known as horsetail or marestail, is a freshwater macrophyte occurring in lakes, rivers, ponds and marshes. According to 'The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species', H. vulgaris is at a high risk of extinction in Italy in the medium-term future. In the present study, we analysed for the first time the volatile composition of H. vulgaris growing in central Italy. For the purpose, the essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC-MS. The chemical composition was dominated by aliphatic compounds such as fatty acids (26.0%), ketones (18.7%) and alkanes (11.4%), whereas terpenoids were poorer and mostly represented by diterpenes (7.4%). n-Hexadecanoic acid (25.5%), hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (17.5%) and trans-phytol (7.4%) were the major volatile constituents. These compounds are here proposed as chemotaxonomic markers of the species.
