Developing effective and green methods for food analysis and separation has become an urgent issue regarding the ever-increasing concern of food quality and safety. Ionic liquids (ILs) are a new chemical medium and soft functional material developed under the framework of green chemistry and possess many unique properties, such as low melting points, low-to-negligible vapor pressures, excellent solubility, structural designability and high thermal stability. Combining ILs with extraction techniques not only takes advantage of ILs but also overcomes the disadvantages of traditional extraction methods. This subject has attracted intensive research efforts recently. Here, we present a brief review of the current research status and latest developments regarding the application of IL-assisted microextraction, including dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME), in food analysis and separation. The practical applications of ILs in determining toxic and harmful substances in food specimens with quite different natures are summarized and discussed. The critical function of ILs and the advantages of IL-based microextraction techniques over conventional extraction techniques are discussed in detail. Additionally, the recovery of ILs using different approaches is also presented to comply with green analytical chemistry requirements.

In this study, aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) containing a cationic and anionic surfactants mixture were used for the preconcentration of the synthetic food dyes Allura Red AC, Azorubine, Sunset Yellow, Tartrazine, and Fast Green FCF. A rapid, simple, low cost, affordable, and environmentally friendly methodology based on microextraction in ATPSs, followed by spectrophotometric/colorimetric determination of the dyes, is proposed. The ATPSs are formed in mixtures of benzethonium chloride (BztCl) and sodium N-lauroylsarcosinate (NaLS) or sodium dihexylsulfosuccinate (NaDHSS) under the molar ratio close to equimolar at the total surfactant concentration of 0.01–0.20 M. The density, viscosity, polarity, and water content in the surfactant-rich phases at an equimolar ratio BztCl:NaA were determined. The effects of pH, total surfactant concentration, dye concentration, and time of extraction/centrifugation were investigated, and the optimum conditions for the quantitative extraction of dyes were established. The smartphone-based colorimetric determination was employed directly in the extract without separating the aqueous phase. The analytical performance (calibration linearity, precision, limits of detection and quantification, reproducibility, and preconcentration factor) and comparison of the spectrophotometric and smartphone-based colorimetric determination of dyes were evaluated. The method was applied to the determination of dyes in food samples and food-processing industrial wastewater.

A method based on supramolecular liquid phase microextraction has been developed for the preconcentration and determination of trace levels of Sudan I. 1-decanol and tetrahydrofuran were used as supramolecular solvent components. Trace levels of Sudan I were extracted into the extraction solvent phase at pH 4.0 Analytical parameters such as pH, supramolecular solvent volume, ultrasonication, centrifugation, model solution volume, matrix effects have been optimized. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification values for Sudan I were calculated as 1.74 μg L − 1 and 5.75 μg L − 1 , respectively. In order to determine the accuracy of the method, addition and recovery studies were carried out to environmental samples.
