Extracting and converting quantitative data into human error probabilities

Abstract: -This paper discusses a proposed method using a combination of advanced statistical approaches (e.g., meta-analysis, regression, structural equation modeling) that will not only convert different empirical results into a common metric for scaling individual PSFs effects, but will also examine the complex interrelationships among PSFs. Furthermore, the paper discusses how the derived statistical estimates (i.e., effect sizes) can be mapped onto a HRA method (e.g. SPAR-H) to generate HEPs that can then be use in… Show more

“…HRA methods are designed to assess the probability of a human-originated system failure, commonly referred to as Human Error Probability (HEP). There is a long list of HRA methods including THERP [27]- [30], SLIM [31], CREAM [32], [33], ATHEANA [34], [35], IDAC [36], HEART [37], [38] SPAR-H [39] and HERA [40].…”

“…Two interrelationships have been recognized: (1) the effect of one PSF on another PSF; and (2) the influence of a PSF on the effect of another PSF on human performance. (15,27,29,63) The first re-lationship can be understood as mediating effects or dependency of PSFs. For example, time pressure mediated the relationship between time availability and HEP in this study.…”

“…These data can be obtained from operational practice and event reports, cognitive simulations, such as the Man‐Machine Integration Design and Analysis System (MIDAS) and the Information, Decision, Action in Crew context (IDAC) model, and expert judgment . Researchers working on HRA have also been focusing increasingly on analyzing and refining empirical data from simulator studies . Simulators can be roughly classified into two types: microworld simulators and full‐scope simulators .…”
