Extract of Euryale ferox Salisb exerts antidepressant effects and regulates autophagy through the adenosine monophosphate‐activated protein kinase—UNC‐51‐like kinase 1 pathway

Abstract: Positive regulation of autophagy by Euryale ferox Salisb (ES) leads to antidepressant effects. This study focused on the potential antidepressant mechanisms induced by the petroleum ether fraction of ES (ES-PE) in the chronically unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model. Deficits in the sucrose preference test, open field test, tail suspension test, and forced swim test were observed following CUMS, and were reversed following ES-PE administration. Contrary to the expression of mammalian target of rapamyci… Show more

“…all mice were euthanized by cervical dislocation after the behavioral tests, and the hippocampus samples were promptly collected and placed on ice. The samples were then placed into radioimmunoprecipitation assay buffer (Beyotime institute of Biotechnology) with an enzyme inhibitor (Beyotime Institute of Biotechnology) at 5˚C and rapidly homogenized for western blotting, as previously reported (21,26). Protein concentration was determined colorimetrically by BCA assay (Pierce; Thermo Fisher Scientific, inc.).…”

“…The presence of vitamin E by 69.62% (GCMS analysis), the most abundant compound in the extract was found responsible for the neuroprotective behaviour in Euryale ferox petroleum ether extract treated mice. 47 Anti-aging activity A unique assemblage of amino acids in Euryale ferox was reported to have a strong antioxidant property which could remove intermediate free radicals and chain reactions. The leucine to isoleucine ratio, arginine and lysine to proline ratio of raw Euryale ferox were 1.7 and 9.6% respectively.…”

“…The species is often considered as an aquatic food due to its high starch content (more than 70%); additionally, in some areas, people prefer Euryale seed to rice for meal because of its low glycemic index [2]. Furthermore, Euryale semen is also a common Chinese traditional medicine whose pharmacological properties including, anti-depression, anti-oxidant, and anti-diabetic action, have been extensively demonstrated by numerous studies [3][4][5].…”
