The response of potato plants to organo-mineral fertilization is still poorly understood. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate absorption and extraction of micronutrients by Agata potato cultivar in winter crop. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Cristalina, Goiás state, Brazil, from May 26 to August 29 of 2012. The experimental design was a randomized block with five organo-mineral fertilizer rates, one mineral fertilizer rate (control) and four replications for each treatment. The results demonstrated that the mean total absorption of micronutrients by potato plants for the organo-mineral treatments was higher relative to the mineral treatment; and also that micronutrients were absorbed in the following order: Fe> Zn>Mn> Cu> B, in relation to total amounts. The average export of micronutrients in potato plants treated with organo-mineral fertilizer was 28%, 37%, 25%, 8% and 17% for Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn (respectively)relative to total amounts absorbed by the plants.

Phosphorus influence on quality and yield of tubers of dual purpose potato cultivars Even in areas with high levels of phosphorus (P) available in the soil, application of this nutrient is common, aiming to increase potato tuber yield and size. However, the effect of high P rates on tuber yield and quality is not known in these cases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of P fertilization on yield and characteristics of tuber quality of dual purpose potato cultivars, grown in soils with low (14 mg/dm 3 ), medium (36 mg/dm 3 ) and high (70 mg/dm 3 ) P availability. In the three soils, we used the randomized blocks design in a 2x5 factorial scheme, with four replications. The treatments consisted of two potato cultivars (Asterix and Markies) and five P 2 O 5 rates (0, 125, 250, 500, and 1,000 kg/ha). The cultivar Markies was less productive than Asterix but had tubers with higher quality characteristics, such as firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, pulp pH and protein concentration. In soils with low, medium and high P availability, the marketable tuber yield of both cultivars was increased by 376%, 41%, and 26%, respectively, up to maximum agronomic rates of 500, 255, and 239 kg/ha P 2 O 5 . Under low P availability, fertilization increased the average weight, firmness, pulp pH and starch concentration, and decreased the reducing sugar concentration in tubers. In soils with higher P availability, besides having exercised less influence on the yield and quality of tubers, the phosphate fertilizer increased levels of reducing sugars in tubers up to the rate of 453 kg/ha P 2 O 5 , which is not interesting for the industrial processing of potatoes.

Performance of conventional and enhanced‐efficiency nitrogen fertilizers on potato tuber mineral composition and marketability

BACKGROUND Potato is an essential crop for global food security, and its cultivation requires a significant amount of readily available nitrogen (N) to ensure tuber quality. Therefore, managing N with enhanced‐efficiency fertilizers becomes a potential strategy to meet the seasonal potato N demand. A 3 site‐years (SYs) study was conducted to assess the marketable attributes and mineral composition of table‐stock potato in response to N rates and fertilizers urea, ammonium sulfate and ammonium sulfate nitrate (ASN) with nitrification inhibitor dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP). RESULTS At 75% of recommended N rate (RNR), ammonium sulfate and ASN+DMPP ensured marketable tuber yields equivalent to that observed at 100% of RNR. Urea promoted greater tuber K and Mg concentrations than ammonium sulfate and ASN+DMPP. Although inconsistent across SYs, ASN+DMPP generally reduced starch and reducing sugars contents and increased pulp pH and protein content than other fertilizers. Increasing N rates from 50% up to 75% and 100% of RNR increased marketable tuber yields and protein content, whereas soluble solids increased from 50% to 100% of RNR. Conversely, increasing N rates from zero to 75% of RNR reduced tuber firmness, whereas N application reduced tuber P concentration, regardless of N rates. CONCLUSION Although ASN+DMPP showed potential for increasing marketable tuber yield and protein content, potatoes receiving ammonium sulfate and ASN+DMPP lowered tuber K and Mg concentrations compared to those receiving urea. Overall, potato tuber quality improvements are N source‐specific, demanding strategies under which these fertilizers can ensure/improve tuber nutritional composition along with size quality. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.
