External Validation of the “Walking Estimated Limitation Calculated by History” (WELCH) Questionnaire in Patients with Claudication

Abstract: The WELCH score correlates moderately with treadmill-walking capacity in patients with or without PAD, and with or without typical VTC. It appears to be a simple to complete and easily scored instrument to help clinicians standardise the subjective estimation of walking capacity in their patients.

“…It is important to note that due to the low educational levels in patients who utilize the public health system, our version of the questionnaire uses an interview format, which is different than the self-completed format of other WELCH versions. 16 , 17 , 21 , 22 Thus, in order to obtain similar results to those described in this study, the Brazilian Portuguese WELCH version should be applied using an interview format.…”

“…The Walking Estimated-Limitation Calculated by History (WELCH) questionnaire was recently proposed as a new simple and easily scored four-item questionnaire to assess walking impairment in patients with IC. Although the WELCH questionnaire has been validated in other languages 16 , 17 , it has not yet been translated and validated into the Portuguese language, limiting its use in Brazilian patients with IC. Thus, the aim of the present study was to analyze the psychometric properties of a Brazilian Portuguese version of the WELCH questionnaire in patients with IC.…”

“…The secondary outcomes of the study will be the maximal duration of walking, variation in TcPO 2 , the ABI value measured during the Strandness exercise test, variations in peak VO 2 , endothelial function (using the EndoPAT® system), cardiovascular risk factors (Body Mass Index, lipids (LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides), resting arterial blood pressure, glycaemic status (fasting glycaemia, glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level), and the scores obtained in the WELCH questionnaire [ 22 ].…”

“…The WELCH (Walking Estimated Limitation Calculated by History) questionnaire is a self-administered questionnaire validated in French and specific to PAD [ 22 ]. Via four questions (‘duration of slow walking’ , ‘duration of moderate walking’ , ‘duration of fast walking’ , ‘comparison of one’s walking speed with that of one’s entourage’), it evaluates the symptoms of the claudication in everyday life.…”

“…Az alsó végtag funkcionális kapacitását a WELCH-(Walking Estimated-Limitation Calculated by History) kérdőívvel értékeltük. Ennek használatához a kérdőív fejlesztője az írásos hozzájárulását adta [21]. Alkalmazása előtt Brislin visszafordítási módszerét alkalmaztuk az eszköz magyar változatának elkészítéséhez [22].…”
