Extensive epidermoid cyst of the submental region

Abstract: Epidermoid cysts are malformations that are rarely observed in the submental region. Imaging has an important role in surgical planning according to the size and location of the cyst in relation to geniohyoid and mylohyoid muscles. This article reports the case of a 15-year-old female patient complaining of submental swelling. The differential diagnosis included infection, tumor, ranula, and abnormalities during embryonic development. The lesion was surgically excised using an extra-oral approach. The histopat… Show more

“…Transcutaneous, prolonged median glossotomy, and midline incision are some of the surgical options. 9 Cysts above the geniohyoid muscle, such as the 1 in this case, are generally treated with intraoral approached excision. Excision with intraoral approach has both esthetic and functional benefits.…”

“…While small cysts may be treated by CO2- or erbium-YAG-laser [ 16 ][ 17 ][ 18 ][ 19 ], larger cysts need a surgical approach with cold steel [ 3 ][ 7 ][ 8 ]. Since skin sagging is a possible outcome after removal of larger cysts, a small sheet of the epidermis above the cyst is excised.…”
