Extension of the wechsler memory scale norms to older age groups

Abstract: To extend the norms of the Wechsler Memory Scale, Form I, to older age groups, the test was administered to 64 Ss 60 years of age and older. Because there was significant correlation between WMS performance and IQ, the results were broken down further into IQ ranges. In addition to the standard administration of the WMS, a 1-hour delayed recall of the Logical Memory subtest was included. Performance on the delayed recall task by 51 younger Ss also was presented.

“…However, the right lesion patients performed within the normal range on the logical memory story A subtest7 suggesting that this change in test administration did not alter test performance. In addition, the group sizes were small and some of these findings need to be replicated in other patient groups.…”

“…This limitation was imposed because the subtests of Personal and Current Information, Orientation, and Mental Control are simple enough so that they discriminate very little or not at all between differing age groups of normal or near-normal adults (Cauthen, 1977 ; Wechsler, 1945) and thus are of little importance for purposes of comparative clinical assessment.…”

“…The data reported by Hulicka (1966), Cauthen (1977), and Bak and Greene (1980) all strongly support the observation that an approximate 20 year mean age difference between groups of aged adults is productive of significant differences in performance on the Visual Reproduction subtest, with the more aged adults performing substantially lower. These studics do not support the same strong observation for the Logical Memory or Associate Learning subtests, although minimal support of a trend toward performance decline with increasing age can be found for the Associate Learning subtest.…”
