Interior type permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) have been widely used for various applications because of their high efficiency and high power density. It is well known that the flux weakening control of an IPMSM can extend the operating range by reducing the back-EMF and producing reluctance torque. An IPMSM, however, experiences a large harmonic iron loss in the stator teeth caused by the distorted flux density. In particular, the harmonic eddy current loss significantly increases in the high speed region under flux weakening control.This paper describes a novel motor-drive system that includes an individual multi-phase drive in order to control the current and voltage in each armature winding. The proposed system can be expected to achieve high efficiency driving, a wide operating range, fail-safety and so on. Furthermore, the proposed method gives the distorted flux density distribution a sinusoidal waveform, because the individual control can observe and regulate the instantaneous flux linkage in each stator tooth, although the motor consists of a full-pitch distributed winding. Therefore, the proposed drive can suppress the harmonic iron loss under the flux weakening operation. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve an extensive reduction in the total iron loss in particular in the high speed region.

To extend the constant power range and enlarge the output power of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system fed by a single power source, an improved direct torque control (DTC) strategy is proposed for the open winding PMSM (OW-PMSM) system fed by hybrid inverter. The hybrid inverter system is composed of a main inverter powered by a DC voltage power source and a compensation inverter powered by a floating capacitor. A modified strategy using the main inverter voltage as the feedback is proposed to maintain the maximum voltage of main inverter and modify the stator flux linkage reference for the flux weakening operation. Moreover, the voltage references for two inverters are distributed appropriately to extend the constant power range and enlarge the output power of the OW-PMSM. Simulation results verify the effectiveness and superiorities of the proposed strategy.

A permanent-magnet linear vernier (PMLV) motor has the advantages of large force and low cost, but it suffers from a low-power factor. This study proposes an instantaneous power control algorithm by using a dual-inverter open-winding (OW) configuration to equivalently improve the PMLV motor power factor. In the proposed algorithm, the active and reactive powers for the motor operation are supplied by the main and compensation inverters, respectively. Therefore, the main inverter dc-link voltage is fully utilised to generate the active power, which is equivalent to the improvement of the motor power factor. Furthermore, a hybrid discontinuous pulse width modulation (HDPWM) scheme is proposed, which takes into consideration the power factor characteristics of the dual-inverter. Compared to the existing OW modulation ones, the proposed HDPWM technique can greatly reduce the dual-inverter loss. The experimental results are carried out to verify the proposed control strategy.
