Extended use of computed tomography in the management of complex aortic problems: A learning experience

Abstract: Eighty-nine patients with clinical problems arising from the thoracic or abdominal aorta had computed tomography (CT) scans with contrast enhancement in addition to standard aortograms. Forty-four patients had aneurysms, 22 had aortic graft complications, and 23 had aortoiliac occlusion. CT scanning provided diagnostic information not apparent by conventional angiography in 39 patients (43.8%). This additional information did not significantly alter the operative management in 13 patients (14.6%). The helpful … Show more

“…22,17,18 In addition, it was reported that ACI values were significantly higher in patients with coronary disease, cerebrovascular disease, or occlusive arteriosclerosis, conditions which are closely associated with arteriosclerosis. 15,16 In the present study, the ACI was high in patients with a history of arteriosclerotic diseases. The ACI is a measure of calcification of the arterial wall.…”

“…An area with calcification was scored 1, while an area without calcification was scored 0. The total score for calcification in all slices was then calculated: 15,16 ACI ϭ (total score for calcification in each slice)/ (12 ϫ [the number of slices]) ϫ 100…”
