The urgent need for research and study with nondestructive and noninvasive methods and the preservation of cultural heritage led to the development and application of methodologies for the multi-level digitization of cultural elements. Photogrammetry and three-dimensional scanning offer photorealistic and accurate digital representations, while X-rays and computed tomography reveal properties and characteristics of the internal and invisible structure of objects. However, the investigation of and access to these datasets are, in several cases, limited due to the increased computing resources and the special knowledge required for their processing and analysis. The evolution of immersive technologies and the creative industry of video games offers unique user experiences. Game engines are the ideal platform to host the development of easy-to-use applications that combine heterogeneous data while simultaneously integrating immersive and emerging technologies. This article seeks to shed light on how heterogeneous digital representations of 3D imaging and tomography can be harmoniously combined in a virtual space and, through simple interactions, provide holistic knowledge and enhanced experience to end users. This research builds on previous experience concerning the virtual museum for the Antikythera Mechanism and describes a conceptual framework for the design and development of an affordable and easy-to-use display tool for combined representations of heterogeneous datasets in the virtual space. Our solution was validated by 62 users who participated in tests and evaluations. The results show that the proposed methodology met its objectives. Apart from cultural heritage, the specific methodology could be easily extended and adapted for training purposes in a wide field of application, such as in education, health, engineering, industry, and more.

Virtual Reality Integration for Enhanced Engineering Education and Experimentation: A Focus on Active Thermography

The interconnection between engineering simulations, real-world experiments, and virtual reality remains underutilised in engineering. This study addresses this gap by implementing such interconnections, focusing on active thermography for a carbon fibre plate in the aerospace domain. Six scenarios based on three parameters were simulated using ComSol Multiphysics 6.2 and validated experimentally. The results were then integrated into a virtual reality serious game developed with Unreal Engine 5.3.2 and aimed at educating users on thermography principles and aiding rapid experimental condition analysis. Users are immersed in a 3D representation of the research laboratory, allowing interaction with the environment, understanding thermographic setups, accessing instructional videos, and analysing results as graphs or animations. This serious game helps users determine the optimal scenario for a given problem, enhance thermography principle comprehension, and achieve results more swiftly than through real-world experimentation. This innovative approach bridges the gap between simulations and practical experiments, providing a more engaging and efficient learning experience in engineering education. It highlights the potential of integrating simulations, experiments, and virtual reality to improve understanding and efficiency in engineering.

The concept of gamification, originally rooted in digital media and game design, has increasingly emerged as a pivotal element in psychology and engagement strategies. Its application spans diverse domains within healthcare, offering innovative solutions to transform patient care through behavior modification and heightened engagement. This contemporary perspective explores theoretical frameworks and provides a critical interdisciplinary examination of current advancements in gamification for mental health and health psychology, identifying existing knowledge gaps and projecting future trends and research directions within these contexts. Based on this, concise criteria for designing, implementing, and evaluating gamification in healthcare, aligned with acknowledged best practices to promote ethical, fair, and trustworthy systems, are outlined, establishing a robust theoretical framework to design gamified interventions and scientifically evaluate their impact.
