Extended Reality in Neurosurgical Education: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Surgical simulation practices have witnessed a rapid expansion as an invaluable approach to resident training in recent years. One emerging way of implementing simulation is the adoption of extended reality (XR) technologies, which enable trainees to hone their skills by allowing interaction with virtual 3D objects placed in either real-world imagery or virtual environments. The goal of the present systematic review is to survey and broach the topic of XR in neurosurgery, with a focus on education. Five databa… Show more

“…The neurosurgical community has been fortunate. Despite the slow and pendulous interest in adopting new technology, parallel developments in the mixed reality (MR) realms have allowed for the rekindling of interest in adapting new MR gadgets [ 1 , 5 , 19 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. HoloLens 2 has brought MR back to our theatres, providing a significant leap forward and overcoming the disadvantages of the previous VR and AR systems.…”

“…According to the literature, such VR technology expedited the development of immersive and collaborative learning in the classroom [ 24 ]. In addition, the extended reality (XR) and AR have been investigated widely for educational purposes [ 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Furthermore, with the expansion of wearables in education, digital augmentation of physical activities have been used for virtual field trips [ 28 ].…”
