Use of Mixed Reality in Neuro-Oncology: A Single Centre Experience

Abstract: (1) Background: Intra-operative neuronavigation is currently an essential component to most neurosurgical operations. Recent progress in mixed reality (MR) technology has attempted to overcome the disadvantages of the neuronavigation systems. We present our experience using the HoloLens 2 in neuro-oncology for both intra- and extra-axial tumours. (2) Results: We describe our experience with three patients who underwent tumour resection. We evaluated surgeon experience, accuracy of superimposed 3D image in tumo… Show more

“…This technology seeks to provide surgeons with detailed and continuous visualisation of the individual patient's anatomy during surgical procedures. MR technology has been applied in various surgical procedures to improve anatomy visualisation and dissection accuracy, including neurosurgery [11], venipuncture [12], hepatobiliary and transplant surgery [13], and craniomaxillofacial plastic surgery [14].…”

“…For the AR-related experience, the Microsoft HoloLens was worn by the primary user in the actual operating theatre. Details of its use in the adult neurosurgical operating theatre have been previously described in the literature [8,22]. Similar to the VR setup, the Ho-loLens is also a standalone system that is wirelessly connected to the cloud-based Holoeyes XR platform.…”

“…Hence, this workflow involves frequent switching of views during the surgery and may be disruptive intraoperatively [6,27]. MR devices in the form of 3D goggles, in corroboration with their software applications, have been described as a useful intraoperative adjunct to allow the neurosurgeon to visualize the tumor spatially within the brain seamlessly [8]. Nonetheless, these cases have been mostly reported in adult neurosurgery, and overall, the incorporation of MR systems into routine use for neurosurgery is still in its infancy [5].…”
