Expression profiling shows differential molecular pathways and provides potential new diagnostic biomarkers for colorectal serrated adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Serrated adenocarcinoma (SAC) is a recently recognized colorectal cancer (CRC) subtype accounting for 7.5 to 8.7% of CRCs. It has been shown that SAC has a poorer prognosis and has different molecular and immunohistochemical features compared with conventional carcinoma (CC) but, to date, only one previous study has analyzed its mRNA expression profile by microarray. Using a different microarray platform, we have studied the molecular signature of 11 SACs and compared it with that of 15 matched CC with the aim… Show more

“…FSCN1 is an actin-binding protein frequently overexpressed in a variety of cancers including colon cancer and predicts poor prognosis (41). FSCN1 is also highly expressed in serrated colon cancers (42). TMF-regulated nuclear protein (TRNP1) is a nuclear protein that plays a role in mammalian brain cortex development (43).…”

“…TRPM4 frequency in tumour cells was scored in 10% increments, while intensity was scored based on a three‐tier system (i.e. negative, weak/moderate or strong), as utilized by previous studies . Each DLBCL case was reviewed again on a separate occasion, and the frequency scores obtained from both reviews were averaged yielding the final scores.…”

“…13, 119 It appears that the different subclasses of CRCs (MSI, CIN, and CIMP) have different dependences on the pathways, which would create an opportunity to more precisely select effective therapies for these CRCs based on their molecular subclass. 120122 . There is also some evidence that this dependency may begin in the polyp phase of the polyp→CRC sequence, which implies that certain chemoprevention strategies may be more effective than others for preventing specific molecular types of CRC.…”
